With a couple points I'll be drawing the ES 1st Rifle tag for this area. I'm planning on taking a look at it once this summer before the hunt. I'll be hunting off horses and plan to get back in there as far as I can or wherever the elk are. Never even looked at this country before, let alone hunted it, any info would be much appreciated. Thanks guys

If it's unit 24 I've seen less people in the mall! I used to hunt there but it got way too popular. Last time I went four of backpacked up past Big Fish Lake in a Wilderness area. After 5 or 6 days one of us say one cow w/ a calf. They were the only elk we say...

I gotta believe that anywhere else you look will have more elk.

Good luck,

Grizlyhunter is right. I hunted there acouple years ago adn there was a ton of orange in unit 24. I didn't have a horse though. Maybe that would help get away from them.

I've been there about five times but I personally would try an unknown place before "I" would ever go back, at least for rifle anyways. If you do go make sure it's the 1st season. After that the elk are pretty much pushed out of the public land down into he private land. Also, I strongly recommend that you call the local big game biologist for the unit you're considering. He will give you the straight scoop on the unit you're considering.

That area does have special place in my heart though. We shot two 5 x 5 bulls on an unguided backpacking trip there in '88. We packed them about six miles to the truck on our backs. I still hurt when I think about that. But my elk was the 1st animal mounted for my trophy room. Fond memories. :)

Good luck.
