Our son drew the Utah Youth Rut Elk Hunt. He has just turned 14 and is very excited. We would love to make this a hunt of a lifetime for him. He has looked forward to hunting since he was about 2 years old. If any one has any good info on this hunt please let us know.

Congradulations. My little brother had the same tag last year. Pray for colder weather, although this is a good tag, it can be hard to find the elk. They have been chased for almost 4 weeks by archery hunters. So prepare for alot of hiking to backcountry places. Unless you know someone who has private property or access to some. There isn't alot of elk on general units. There are a few. Start with someone who will be archery hunting and buddy up with them. Good luck

I have been out during this hunt and the bulls are going crazy. Learn how to use a primos hoochie mama and hyperlip cow calls. You'll have many bulls bugling and coming in to them.

I can suggest some great areas to go in the Uinta's where I've personally called in a dozen bulls in less than 3 days during this period while my buddy was moosehunting up there two years ago.

Send me an email and I'll get some more detailed information to you.

Cheers,
pete

Here's an example of what you might be able to see up there.

I called in a nice 6x5 bull right by a road as it was getting dark. The bull came in to about 80 yards on one side of a gravel road. I was about 15 yards on the other side in some brush winding him up with cow calls and small bull bugles.

Right about the time I thought he was going to start to come across the road, a truck pulling a huge horse trailer came along. That bull was so fired up that he even bugled right as the truck/trailer was right between us.

If the window of the truck had been open that guy would have had a monster bugle right in their cab as he went by :)

It was one of the crazier things I've ever seen, much less on an open bull unit here in Utah.

The great thing about time of year is that the Uinta's have only about 20 hunters on the whole range. You'll see other people, but the elk relax and you can have a great time up there.

Cheers,
Pete

My nephew had this tag last year (05) I was only there to help over the weekend no luck on sat. but on sun. morning we called a very nice 6x6 bull to within 30 yards this bull was so fired up I could have called him into an asphalt parking lot unfortunatley my brother and nephew had neve seen this befor and both of them froze up and never fired a shot.Great hunt though,we were up by Grizzley mountain.WAY GOOD LUCK ON YOU'RE HUNT.

My son's 14 birthday was yeaterday and he did draw the Youth Bull Tag. Any info for him so I can get him started would be appreciated. He got a really nice Ant in Wy last year. He's hooked and ready for elk. We chased them last year in Colorado with his .50 cal muzzleloader, but nothing close.

hey thanks for the info.......wheres grizzly mountain? but thanks again for the info.....that sucks he didnt get to shoot

My son drew last year. Opening morning I called in a rag horn. The bull came in bugling and hot. My son got buck (bull) fever so bad he missed him standing still at under 60 yards. He was shaken so bad, even with the gun rest I had him shooting from. Hey, at least he got the shot off, I know some guys that can't believe they missed until after they check there gun and relieze they never even pulled the trigger. He'll never forget that morning or all the extra hiking we did the rest of the hunt.
