Mt Dutton permit

My son was fortunate enough to draw a Mt Dutton permit. I am interested in any and all input on this unit, as I have never been so fortunate to draw a tag in this unit. I am very excited to be hunting with my son for a good bull this year.
Thanks,
Bill

The best advice I can give is get in shape. Access is very limited to trucks and ATV's, the mountain can get rough, and it is very remote.

This is a late rifle hunt. We are not worried about being in shape. I sheep hunt every year, and am used to packing elk long distances. We are willing to put in the effort required.

I don't know how these elk move once the snow flies, for example. I've got to think there would normally be some snow by November on the peaks, probably enough to move the elk. Any insights?
Thanks,
Bill

Guess I'm going to have to start hunting sheep...
Wish I didn't have to worry about being in shape..
ktc is right, it is a tough unit, and the late hunt shouldn't be much different.... Good luck...

KTC,

No apology needed. I appreciated your suggestion that this is a rough, remote unit.
While some might enjoy shooting their bull from the truck, I really enjoy getting back away from the roads. It does put a premium on proper scouting, however. I'll put in the time over the next few months on the ground, but I have always found input from others helpful as I begin to learn a new area.
Thanks,
Bill

Bill,

I'll be down there in Sept. with a bud that drew a bow tag.

Would give ya some intel but alot can change in the 2 months seperating the dates...

Maybe the BLM or DWR Biologist can give some winter range info... or call a few of the '05 cow tag holders that hunted and see what they have to say about any bulls they might have seen...

Bill, I know of a guy who is a guide. I work with his son in law and he will be down there with him on the early rifle hunt. If you would like his name I will send you a PM. He guides on both Monroe and Dutton and maybe he can help with some info.
