Colorado Elk Dilema

Hey guys,

Just wanted to see what you think of my points situation. 7 points now going into next years draw. My dad and his hunting partner are getting into their late 50's so we can't really wait around for 61, or 10 or something like that. The problem is that from the research I have done, Colorado does not seem to have any real good hunts for medium point holders. Most of the bulls in the units that take 7-8 points aren't a whole lot better than an over the counter unit. Am I wrong in this assumtion? We are getting close to enough points to draw 76 or maybe the muzzleoader hunt in 66. Think these would be a good choice? Not looking for 380 bulls, just quality experience while my dad can still hike around. You guys got any ideas or suggestions as to what you would do next year?

Some OTC units have 300+ size bulls BUT very few. I would just find a unit that your points fit and do it(preferrably muzzleloader or the 1st rifle season as bulls are rutting) . MAny units that take points dont even hold much more that a 350 bull. It is more of a factor of less orange in the woods with high point units.
Bottom line----->dont wait.

There are lots of 300+ bulls,
The problem is that they're on privet land.
if you wait you can get a chance to draw say unit 10, or 2,
but then again the old boys are hanging on privet property.
hunt those areas of public land where you know the big elk have been spoted on privet property, hunt the edges.
find their crossing spots, or lure them over with some sweet talk, and and INSTANT ELK decoy.
If your going to wait for the old man, remember he's walking slower every year.
I know, I "is" one.
If your looking to find them on public land better look in the places called hell holes,
and take a frying pan.
stay in a couple days and eat as much as you can then pack out the back straps and the head & rack.
I realy have to chuckle when i read of all of you that try to save up points,
You guys just don't get it.
You don't understand what hunting is all about.
But to each their own.
Good luck this year.
