Finally got some friends to go elk hunting and we picked Unit 40 in Idaho. First time for me but did we make a bad choice?

Thanks,

Unit 40 has some tremendous bulls, but getting a tag is a problem. Idaho has a 10% cap on non-res tags in any controlled hunt. If less than 10 tags are issued in any one hunt, Non-residents can get no more than 1 tag.

Last years drawing results.

The any weapon early hunt (rut) has 5 tags, non-res did not get any tags, 60% success rate

The late hunt has 40 tags, 22% success rate, non-res gets 4 tags.

The cow hunt has 100 tags 8% success rate, only 4 non-res put in for this hunt last year and all got tags.

So If you put in for the early hunt as a group you will not be drawn, chock it up to experience.

If you are set on hunting Idaho there are some over the counter tags available to non-residents with moderate success rates of between 15 to 30%

After reviiewing the stats we applied for the second hunt for elk, cow only as our second chance and deer.

Unit 40 holds some of Idaho's biggest bucks. I hope you draw a tag. Unit 40 has a 2 point general season open to over the counter tags. That is a good way to get to know the country. Good luck.

That second hunt is a tough one. Those elk get to moving all over the place and really split up. But it is not impossible. Good luck and keep us posted if you draw.

Didn't draw the control hunt tags so we are looking at what areas we might want to try with a general tag.
