I drew a nonresident archery elk tag (maybe the only one under the new % rules)for Unit 10 and neither my partner nor I have been in the area. Any information on where to start looking and support facilities available in Rifle or surrounding area would be appreciated. My hunting partner drew a muzzleloader cow tag for Unit 10 as well and we're looking for a meat locker to store his cow as his season closes a week before mine. We plan to be in the area on the 6th of |Sept and stay until we fill or the seasons are over. If your wondering we both had 15 pts going in to the draw.

I think you're looking for support services in Rangely rather than Rifle. Rangely is a small town but you'll find the basics--gas, groceries, mechanic/tire shop, meat locker, etc... Everything is basically on the highway through town and if you don't see what you're looking for just ask anyone you find.

They have a meat locker there. There is a local taxidermist that was very helpful to me but I can't remember the name. The G&F guy for the area is very helpful as well.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-19-06 AT 09:04AM (MST)[p]The locker is called "The Huntin Place". The lady that runs it is very nice and very helpful. The guy is not. They have maps and info. Get an up to date map as boundaries and rules change. Four Queens motel is reasonably priced, clean, washer dryer, microwave, and conveniently located next to the supermarket and within walking distance of the restaurants and liquor store. There is also a KOA type camp ground outside of town. Be careful if you hunt around the monument as the Forest Service is very particular about what you can and can't do and where you can and can't go. If you have not hunted around the monument before a stop at the headquarters located outside Dinosoar would be well worth the time. Enjoy.

In the past I have stayed in Dinosaur. I have hunted on Blue Mt. and this is much closer to where we have hunted. Lots of private ground and national monument, you don't want to cross on either of those types of property.
There is a lot of elk on Stuntz Ridge on top of Blue and on Moosehead Mt. For archery, I would look on Moosehead, this seems to be where alot of the bulls hang out until they get "the twinge" to go and find the ladies which the past few years have been around the first week of September. I had a muzzle tag 5 years ago and didn't see a mature bull until opening day which was September 8th and killed a nice bull the next day.

Good Luck,
