This is my first post; though I have been reading for a while. I am avid bowhunter for deer in Georgia but recently my desire and passion has taken a turn towards western big game especially elk after I spent a summer in Meeker, Co. After not getting drawn for both Utah and New Mexico my attention has turned to buying a landowner tag in New Mexico or an over the counter in Colorado-either way it would be in archery season. Anyway I have the opportunity to buy a landowner voucher in unit 6c in New Mexico. I know nothing about that area and would like to know if there is alot of public land in that unit, how hard is it hunted, and what type of bulls come from that area. Any info would be appreciated seeing as how I need to make a decision kind of quickly.
P.S. If anyone knows of two unit wide landowner vouchers for archery season anywhere out west I would consider buying them.
Thanks,
Go Dawgs

Gents, if possible, are you able to provide info on 6C to me as well? I also have a chance at a 6C tag.

Thanks in advance for any help you choose to give.

There is plenty of public land - any plenty of Elk.

300 to 320 bulls can be found.

Lots of rutting activity.

I drew a second season bow tag for 6C, it was my 3rd choice but it'll work . I hunted 6C on muzzle loader hunts in 01 and 02 and killed a rag horn in 02 . Its a pretty good unit , both 6c and 6a have good elk numbers . The muzzle loader hunts I hunted where at the begining of Oct and the bulls were still bugling so I'm pretty excited about the second bow season. The unit has elk of all sizes , alot of rag horns get killed , but its because there is alot of them , but some 300-340 class bulls will still be taken and every couple years you'll here of bulls in the 360 range being killed. Its not a slam dunk hunt by any means , many people think because it borders the Valles Caldera that the 380+ bulls are spilling over into A & C , not the case . Many elk will cross the border, but most of the time its in the direction of going into the Valle .
All in all , its a pretty good unit with great oppertunity of seeing and taking an elk , and like I said its does have some bigger bulls too , but its not TROPHY UNIT by NM standards.I say buy the tags , and come hunt elk , let the cards lay as they may.Oppertunity is simply chance waiting to happen eh...

i know that area really well, and there are quite a few elk in the unit, you just need to be patient and get as far away from the road and four wheelers as you possibly can just hunt hard and you should do ok, their are plenty of good bulls but anything over 300 is doin good up their you wont see as many huge elk as down in the gila, but the price is usually a lot more friendly so it is a pretty good hunt
