NM unit 24 bull elk youth hunt

Help! My son drew the early bull hunt in NM 24. Only ten tags and he drew the only non-guided non-resident tag. The warden told me the unit was much good anymore. That five years ago it was a great hunt but not now. Any suggestions as to where to hunt this unit? Any thoughts? Thanks.

Did your son draw unit 24 inside the Fort Bayard refuge?

If so They usually have a camp for the youth hunters that draw that hunt. It used to be a great youth hunt, but the Elk population has gone down quite a bit. Should still be a good hunt.

Yes. His tag is for the entire unit including the Ft. Would you only hunt the Ft. or areas outside the Ft.?

Definetly stay in FT Bayard. Very few elk outside it's perimeters.

Alex Munoz is the guy that used to run a camp for the youngsters. He has a magazine that he published a few times a year. I don't have is number, but he used to work at Foxworth and Galbrith(sp) in Silver City. You might want to try an contact him.

My nephew drew the hunt as well and I plan on spending a lot of time in the area. The best area to hunt will be the refuge and the immediate perimeter. I agree that over the past several years the numbers are slightly down, but I do see very nice bulls every year in the refuge while out driving around in sept. and oct.
