My son has drawn the Utah youth elk tag and we'll be hunting the north slope of the Uinta's. We'll have a couple days to scout and are familiar with the area, but would appreciate any last minute intelligence on the herd locations from archery hunters. My son will bowhunting with his recurve and with any luck will have a chance at his first bull. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-01-06 AT 10:52PM (MST)[p]If he has a Youth L.E. elk tag why would you hunt the open bull units? Hell, anyone can just buy one of thoes tags. I would be spending my time where the herd densities and ratios are high.

BT--

The answer to your question is that open bull units are the only units they can hunt. The reason it is limited is because it is for youth only and their hunt starts Sept 16th--26th right during the rut--severl weeks prior to those folks can just buy one of 'those tags'--make sense now?

PleaseDear,

We appreciate the offer, how do we go about hooking up? My son will be in Utah starting with the archery deer hunt (he's taking the fall off before doing the college thing and will be bow hunting deer and elk in Utah then heading to Montana for fish and fowl). His plan is to hunt the Wasatch front and do a little scouting on the north slope up until I fly in on Sept 8. I've got a archery deer tag, so we'll deer hunt up until a couple days before his elk season then focus on his elk hunt.

I will be up there with my 14 year old Son also. We will be working the area South of Manila, up higher. We'll just have to find them. I can share info with you if you want. Been up there before, just hope they are vocal.

We will be like whirlwinds this year, It's been an unbelieveable year, I drew a sheep tag in New Mex, and Mtn Goat in Colorado. My son drew another bull tag in the Valle Vidal unit of New Mex for Oct 7th. These hunts are all around the same time between Aug 26th and Oct 11. But what a problem to have. We have a lot of work between now and then. Good luck to you, maybe we can be resourceful for each other.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-07-06 AT 00:31AM (MST)[p]I have guided several youth hunters on this hunt. Plan on a very tough hunt. The elk numbers, as well as the size, are not what they are in the Limited Entry areas. My suggestion would be to not pass on any bull in the 250-300 class range and be prepared to get off the road a couple of miles to find the elk. Although it is set aside for the youth hunters the elk have had a lot of pressure from archery hunters. The area you are talking about is one of the only areas in the state where you can hunt mature bulls with an over the counter archery tag and an any bull rifle tag. Good luck! I am always rooting for youngsters to score.

awholelottabull, I agree with you, however what do you think about other areas in the state outside the LE's. Access issues and humping around 5-8 miles to get to them. Thanks for input, I just hope they are vocal, that would help. Lucky for he kid we will be using this hunt to prepare for his New Mexico Valle Vidal youth bull tag he also drew for Oct 7-11. If nothing else this should help him, he'll get some time in the field chasing elk.

Nimroddy - Access shouldn't be an issue. I know there is some private land on the North Slope that may get in your way and the Ute Indian reservation on the South Slope but it is mostly public land. I will send you a PM with some more detailed information. If you have horses the further you get off the road the more elk you will see. Remember that these bulls will come to calls but in my experience, they come silent. They have been called to so much that they have heard every call made by man. That is why you have to get away from hunter concentrations. The Utah tag your kid has will not even compare to the Valle Vidal tag. That should be a really fun hunt with lots of opportunity for nice bulls. Make sure you post some pictures when you get back.

if your son has the youth elk tag why would he be wanting to use his recurve when he has the option of using a rifle. just a thought

Mostly for the challenge and experience. The skills necessary to get within 25 yards of a wild animal undetected, then executing a killing shot using a weapon that requires a great deal effort, practice and commitment to master takes the intensity and satisfaction of the hunt to a new level. He'll bring his rifle for the last part of the season, should he decide to use it. Meat and antlers are all good, but the hunting experience is what we cherish.

I appreciate the feedback to my post, any other archers hunting the north slope this fall?
