What are you guys using for diaphram calls?? I am looking to pick up a few to start practicing on, don't know whether to go with the Primos or Carlton line. Do you have an preferences?? Thanks

I really like the Primos line. It's really what fits well in your mouth and you are comfy with. Get a couple and just play with them and see what you like yourself. Practice, practice and practice with any reed and you will do just fine.

I personally always have a Primos double reed in my mouth or near it all the time. Can make about any noise, both bull/cow, with one of those in your mouth.

I second Oddnut1. I really like the primos diaphram calls. The red terminator being my favorite.

I'd also recommend the single and/or double reed hyperlip calls. They make the most realistic cow calls in my opinion.

BUGLIN BULL GAME CALLS. IT JUST SEEMS LIKE THEY PUT A LITTLE
MORE INTO EACH CALL. THEY MAKE CALLS THAT ARE EASY TO LEARN WITH
AS WELL AS CALLS THAT ARE WORTHY OF ANY COMPETITION. I'VE ALWAYS
USED PRIMOS AND CARLTONS AND THEY'RE BOTH GREAT BUT BUGLIN BULLS
JUST SEEMED TO CLICK WITH ME.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-05-06 AT 11:27PM (MST)[p]i learned to call w/primos calls but have now moved on and now i am using calls from bugling bull game call co, www.buglingbull.com ...i like the way they sound better, i do not have to trim them and they seem to be better quality...i have tried carltons diaphrams and just flat out hate them...i have two brand spanking new 4 packs of the primos stuff if somebody is interested in buying them =0)
buy a few of each brand and give them a shot, what works for one may not work for others...

Bluebulls and ixsolracxi,

I would have to agree with you on Bugling Bull Game calls, although I may be a little prejustice... :) The old bald guy that's hand-making every one of them knows what he's doing, and is interested in helping others succeed, not just spinning a product to make a few dollars. There's no production line, and every call is made by the same person, which helps ensure that they are all made the same way, every time.

Good luck this fall!

corey,

i just happened to meet the old bald guy in albuquerque 2 weeks ago...a pleasure to meet and chat w/him...i'm thinking of buying yall's monarch bugling system...also enjoyed full of bull 3...i can see why you like his calls =0)

i still have 2 4-packs of primos diaphragms if anybody wants to buy them, send me a pm

Here is my take. Go get a couple and find one that works best for you. Some brands take more air pressure and vice versa. I have had good and bad ones from each of those three companies.

Bugling bulls was the first to make the palate plate elk call, then Primos bought the right to it and infact the same material in bugling bulls calls is the same as what is in the Primos call. Primos furnishes all of the products. Then you have the reject Carlton calls. He tried to copy the palate plate and found himself in court.

It was brought up earlier about the hyperlip. Those things are deadly and for those that can't use a mouth reed, they should look into these calls and get rid of those stupid hoochie mama squeeze calls.

One thing if your just getting into calling with a mouth reed, go get you some practice cd's or video's and practice all the time. Don't go running throught the woods and try blowing the calls. Elk learn fast and you will just scare them away. Learn first and then go listen to them live, then go play and you will love it. Its very addictive.

whs,

I agree with the points you bring up about learning the call before season starts. And calling elk is very addictive!

Bugling Bull did sell the rights to the patent to Primos, and maintained the right to manufacture calls under the same patent.

One minor point of clarification, however, Bugling Bull actually does not use the same materials as Primos, and does not get their product from Primos. Different metal frames, tape, latex, manufacturing method, etc.

Thanks,
Corey

I like Primos . They make great diaphram calls that last and make great calls even after carrying the call in my mouth for hours , it still performs well. I also have a few Quaker Boy calls that I use to change up the sound .
I think Carlton makes pretty good calls too , but I will say this Ed Sceery calls are terrible! He has his shop here in Santa Fe and can't stand the man and his calls are second rate . If your going to spend money , might as well spend it on quality , go Primos, Carlton etc , but stay away from Sceery elk calls. Just my .02 , but have had them foul up in early cold mornings and the diaphrams stick...

Primos palate plates work great for me. I would highly recommend them. i would like to try their new mini sonic dome.
Jeff

I don't like the mini sonic dome calls. Maybe they just don't fit the roof of my mouth right? They slide around and air frequently escapes. Just my opinion.

there is a similar thread going on right now on the bowsite and there are quite a few that do not like the mini dome, personally i have not tried it...just an fyi

From what I have learned here and on Bowsite, I am going to get some of the Bugling bulls reeds and try them. I can get the primos free, and I will get some, but want to try the Bugling bulls as well. As a side note, I am going to order mine throught elknut (http://www.elknut.com/). He personally gives out lots of good, free advice. Also, I highly recommend his videos/CD's on elk sounds/calling. These are not hunting videos with a few pointers thrown in, they are all about what sounds to make in what situations and tell you what the elk are really saying. They make a lot of sense and they helped me trememdously. Buy one and you will have to get them all! I keep the CD's in my truck and listen (and practice) while driving. Get some odd looks at red lights though!

RE: Prefered Diaphragm Calls??

The bald guy "Rocky" is real nice in person and helps out lots of people at his seminars. Makes a real good product too. I like the red one makes me sound different that most of the other calls out there the big bugle tube works great too....

You can't go wrong with the palate plate. I tried one of the Carlton "Tone Trough" peices of crap and promptly through it away. The old school kind of diaphram call, like the Quaker Boy calls and the like always vibrated in my mouth and drove me crazy. If you are anything like me you don't like anything vibrating in your mouth! The palate plate keeps the reed off of the roof of your mouth and makes it easier to blow more comfortable. I like to practice while I am mowing the lawn or doing yard work. After a while my neighbors join in and we sound like a herd moving through the subdivision. It's pretty funny. I also have a carlton "lonesome cow" bite and blow type call. It works great for about 10 calls and then the reed gets wet and it sounds like a ruptured duck. I also have a Sceery Ace-1 that I also use. I can blow on that one as much as I want and it still works. I like to mix it up to make the elk think I am more than one elk. Calls are great even in the rifle seasons to mask your sound and to stop the elk. I killed my first bull because I blew on my Ivory plate and he stopped in a dead run. That damn Hoochie mama drives me nuts. It just sounds so fake to me, and they all sound the same. When I'm in the woods and I hear one of those its like nails on a chalk board. They are easy to use, so like ATVs we will never get rid of them. All people have their preference, but like has been said before, try a few and use the one you like.

Yes all of you are right. Rocky does make a great call, but I can make and tune my own calls that I make myself with a kit I purchased on line from www.myelkcall.com I found commercailly made calls do have limitations. I make and have a new call every day I hunt and carry the kit with me just incase I get them going and blow out a call.
Now Ii do not feel bad when I throw it away. They only cast me $1.50 each to make.
SO get one they mentioned and practice practice practice. We don't like calling in those who don't. Good luck and good hunting.
