Is anyone wondering the same thing as me in the great shed photos by Ted and Matt. They have found some great sheds but they also have found the heads of 3 great bulls that either died of winter kill, poaching or something else.

3 great bulls found dead while out shed hunting. I can't grasp why.

I know of a few guys who are die hard shed hunters , they ride many miles and long hours combing over the hills looking for nice sheds , and they always come across either winter kills/poached/wounded & never recovered deer and elk. There has been times at the ranch that we would saddle horses to check fence or just check on the cattle and we come across dead bucks and bulls. There are antler buyers who travel around , and they would always show up at my grandpa's home looking .
As for these guys , just by the pictures , looks like they know the area well , planned a day or more and hiked in and looked around and came up with some great finds.I'm willing to bet its not like that every year with as many nice finds , but as long as your consistant every spring , in good areas you'll find some great antler....

Huntnutt1 is right, we have come across dead animals quite often riding fences or moving cattle...amazing what you find when you get way back there.

Not uncommon at all, especially here in Montana, with our little wolf issue.

I was wondering why they didnt have any antlers on their packframes after taking lots of pictures of their finds.
??? Was it photos only because it was in jellystone or some other national park?

Jeff,

I know based on my past driving and hiking in Yellowstone Park the country looks alot like that shown in the background of their photos. If it was YNP, judging by their empty pack frames it looks like they were being good and just taking pics of their better finds. i have gone there simply to do the same a few times myself. It is actually exciting to see those tines poking up above the top of the grass/sage even though i know i will have to say a tearful goodbye when i leave each and every one behind.

I don't know anything about these fella's but I can say this. I tend to agree with rest of the posts to this point. I've found a few pretty nice winter kills for what ever reason over the years riding, checking cows and fence myself. Found some nice Lion kills too especially when we're lion hunting and a few times spring bear hunting. I've also found some pretty nice sheds and heads and had to walk or ride away from them. It's difficult sometimes not to jump to conclusions, I'm guilty myself, but I've learned over time ...
