JUST WONDERING IF ANY ELK HUNTERS HAVE ANY INFORMATION ON: BITTEROOT ELK OUTFITTERS OUT OF HAMILTON MONTANA, TIMM TWARDOSKI RUNS THE OPERATION. HE ALSO CONTRACTS WITH A COUPLE OF OUTFITS, LOOKING TO PLAN A HUNT WITH HIM IN THE BEARTOOTH-ABSORKA WILDERNESS AREA. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP, YD.

YD, The name sounds familiar. Around here, everyone knows someone that knows someone. I know some outfitters in the Root. I'll ask around for you. mtmuley

THANKS MTMULEY I REALLY APPRECIATE THE HELP, THE GUY SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD VALUE DEPENDING ON REPUTATION ETC. YD.

YD,

I can't say I know the outfitters by name or reputation, but I do know that Hamilton and the "Root" are one heck of a long way from the Beartooth-Absorkas Wilderness. But you also says he conracts with a couple outfits. Are those outfits local to the Absorkas area? If that is the case and you can get a good local guide, then that sounds like a good bet, but I would be itchy about contracting a guide that lived or was based 400 miles away from his hunting area.

To me, that's like having a decent mechanic, take on the job of rebuilding the transmission in my truck. Good mechanics can do all sorts of competant work on a vehicle, but transmissions are one of those "specialized" areas, where you lose a lot of the good general mechanics because it is so specialized. And I am not saying you wouldn't end up with a job well done, but I am saying that the odds of a job well done, go down because transmissions are not general mechanic type of work. If it was me, I would take my transmission to a transmission shop.

You may be fine, and could have the hunt of your life. But if I was going to drop any money on a guide, I would prefer that they live reasonably close the hunting area. The only similarity between a "root" hunt and an "Absorkas-Beartooth" hunt is the animal your hunting. Your higher elevations in the "Root" will be where you park the truck in the Beartooth-Absorkas hunt.

That being said, I would love to do a Absorkas Wilderness hunt. I can't imagine many scenarios that have it all according to what I like, but that hunt is one of them that does. You get high-mountain vistas, a good mixture of terrain (timber, canyons and open parks) and a chance to hunt a local and migratory herd of elk if your in the southern half of the Wilderness. Also, that terrain keeps your yahoos out. You will most likely see only a couple people if any, and the elk are plentiful. It is chock full of grizzlies though, so your guide better know how to be relaxed around them and know what to do, should one decide to patronize your camp or your carcass site.

If that "root" outfitter is going to be taking you directly, I would be a very friendly and polite skeptic until he convinces me otherwise. I would ask questions like, why is he running hunts way over there? How many years has he run hunts in the area you are going? What is his success rate in that area?

That Wilderness area also offers a rifle/rut hunt in early October. Is that what you would be going on?

Anyway, I know you have the area right. It's awesome up there. But do you have the right guide for the area? I don't know, but If I was looking for a guide for that hunt, I would be talking to outfitters based out of Big Timber, Red Lodge, Nye (if there is any) or anywhere in the Paradise Valley ESPECIALLY GARDINER. Gardiner MT has a lot of em'.

Best of luck.
