Just wondering in different states when the elk start stripping the velvet . Yesterday took a ride to the coast and all of the bigger bulls ( Tule Elk ) were completetly hard horned with polished tips . Saw a couple of monsters , no hunting allowed . Most of the spikes and smaller bulls still had velvet on .

I've seen elk start rubbing here in NM about the third weekend in August but have also seen a few rag horns with velvet over Labor Day weekend. The mule deer generally rub in mid September. The first muzzle loader hunts here start the third week in Sept , and last year my buddy and his brother both shot muleys on the opener, 1 had full velvet , the other was rubbed and drying.

Idaho is around the 10th of next month for elk and the deer about the 8th of september. At least the big ones that everyone is looking for.

Did'ja go out to Point Reyes? I haven't been out there for over a year. I need to take the kids out when they start bugling....

Let me know when they are bugling, never been out there either and have lived here in the area a very long time.

Up in Northern BC, It is about the same. Late August sometimes early early September before they break and start rubin hard.

Yes , It was Point Reyes . Mid August is a good time to visit . Fog can make glassing tough in the morning . Afternoons are usually great . Just in the entrance in the BIG canyon on the left there are always some big bulls hanging out . Also the first quarter mile on the right holds some really nice bulls . When the rut kicks in they could be anywhere though .
