Drew an any bull tag for the Toutle Unit for modern firearm. Have never been to this unit. I usually hunt the Randle Unit general season. Would appreciate any information I can get. Thank you, Patrick.

Havent been in the Toutle for years. I do know that your odds of shooting a great bull are reeeeealy good! I got my 350 bull last year on Thanksgiving in the Randle unit.

Thanks PB for the encouragement. The more I look into data about the Toutle the more amped I get. Look's to me like lot's of remote country with lot's of gate's. Might be a bicycle and trailer show! That's cool. Let the work begin, it's just part of the journey. Thank's, Patrick.

Not to burst your bubble, but you ain't gonna shoot no 350 bull in the Toutle Unit. I work and play in the unit year around, and pick up sheds in there and the average bull is probably closer to 200. While the biggest bull I've ever seen in WA was in the Toutle, that's not the norm, and we see very few nice bulls (300+) harvested.

Send me a PM with any questions and I'll try to point you in the right direction.

MDC is right on. Sounds like he knows the area and you ought to pm him! I have spent time working and playing in there as well and know a guy that worked in there for many years and played in there as well. For some odd reason, there haven't been many/any big bulls in there since the blast. Before that, yeah, you could see a 350 bull, but not since. You will see a LOT of 5 point bulls that are mature. They wont even be super massive and a really big one will score 220.

To go kill a bull though....you have drawn gold. Make the most of it.

And thank you Hornseeker.

I hunt the toutle unit regularly and I drew toutle archery in 2001. There's a ton of elk but no quality.I hunted 12 of 14 days and saw one six point bull. I called in bulls every day and had a blast. On september 11 I called in the best bull I saw on the hunt but couldn't get a shot, and he was a 250-60 five point, the six point was small. The toutle is 70-80% owned by weyerhauser and is usually locked up for fire danger during bow and muzzleloader but there is a big chunk of state land east of Signal peak that is landlocked by Weyco. Some years even when their land is closed for fire danger Weyco will allow permit holders to cross their land and hunt the state land. Occasionally a bull pushing 300" is killed but few and far between. I've only seen a couple. It's more of a hunt that if you get a shot at a 6 point, take him and be happy to settle for a five point. There is more state land in the south half of the unit as well. Not meaning to burst your bubble but when I hear mention of 350" class bulls in the toutle I got to say something, heck a guys lucky to find a 300" bull in the margaret unit! Some of the problem with bull quality in the toutle is a few hunting parties hunt the bordering units that are general season and if one guy draws a permit they'll take 2-3 bulls out of the toutle on one permit, yeah nice huh! Toutle should be open to general season just my opinion.

Thanks for your reply OutofStater. Any mature, good looking bull will be fine with me. It would be fun to see more elk than people. Last year I saw 1 elk during general season up in Randle unit. After 8 day's. On the last day. In the last hour. Luckily it was a legal bull. A 6x7. Score unknown. I did get him shoulder mounted and he did fill half my freezer with meat. We had camp packed up and were headed home when I saw him off the side of the road in the timber. Thought he was just another patch of those big yellow fern's till I backed up took another look with binoc's. Hunted my butt off 8 day's then had one land in my lap at the last minute. Ya' just never know about hunting. Really looking forward to the Toutle hunt but, also trying to keep myself grounded with reality. Again thanks, Patrick.
