North Slope Sheep Creek

So my friend talked me into joining him on the archery elk hunt this year. I have never hunted elk because I am usually having to much fun chasing deer, and there aren't many elk where I hunt. He has hunted the Sheep Creek area the last few years and has gotten into elk. I have a feeling there is going to be alot of people to compete with, is this true? We are going to do a little scouting in a couple of weeks, but my bet is that we will see elk but when the hunt comes around they are going to disappear up into the wilderness. Does anybody have any experince with this area? If I get off the roads far enough am I going to run into elk? Are the elk call shy, and what kind of bulls come out of the area?

Thanks in Advance
Byron

byron, you need to talk with pleasedear, he knows this area well. I have camped and fished up there and have seen elk in the spring. Big country. Shoot anything with antlers. Most archery guys i have talked to get into the elk up there. Good luck.

There is an outfitter that has started doing bow elk hunts and he has his basecamp right on the edge of Sheep Creek Park.

Good guy but he has a family to feed... ya know..

Very restrictive ATV use... if obeyed.... Long Park resrv. to the west of Sheep Creek lake has the most 'liberal' ATV trail use/system...

Big burn last year going into Weyman Park via Bear Park.. tons of blowdown but lots of great new green grass....

A good enough trail system that a guy could hike up a trail a ways and then bushwack--hunt towards another trail, catch it and head out.... lots of elk get walked by...

Vocal.... a little before the big Labor Day wknd crowd... and a pinch toweards the end of the bow hunt dates....

If your going 'deep' touch base in Manila with the permitted outfitter for some packout options on a harvest...

Keep in mind, the farther ya hunt/follow the Sheep Creek down.. the more of a hell hole you get into....

Thanks for the replies, my friend was really dissappointed about the burn last year because he had been keeping track of some elk in the area. But that could be a good area to check out this year. He also told me about the outfitter that sets up camp now, he was a little bummed about that but what can you do. How would I go about getting that outfitters name or anybody else in the area that could pack out an elk? Thanks again Pleasedear, I really appreciate the info.

Sorry about not mentioning what state.

Call the Forest Service office in Manila or Dutch John and they can give you all his permitted info and his point of contact phone number.

Ashley National Forest, Flaming Gorge Ranger District.

Byron, I have hunted up there for about 20 years. It will be better if you call me instead of me writing all the info down. I will send you a PM.

It’s general for a reason. With enough patience you will find elk. Not huge numbers because of how much area they have to roam. You will hear bugling for sure if you spend enough time. Capitalize on any bull you find because they are generally tough to come by. Success rate is super low.

Lots and lots of people hunt that area these days. I used to hunt it. But after the swarms of people started pouring in I will not step foot there.

I'm going to hunt the North Slope this year during rifle... Saw some elk (including a bull) last year during the muzzy deer hunt so my kids got excited about it. I will harvest anything with antlers. Elk, especially bulls, are few and far between there. I'm going mostly for the experience with my family. And if I get some meat I'll be happy as can be.
