Valle Vidal rut

I have seen several posts on here about the Valle. I drew an archery tag. I am compiling info. Wanted to get the straight skinny on the rut "peak" or narrow it down as close as possible. My buddy that drew it back in the 90's tells me the first week of October. Has anyone that has hunted it(or spent time there with someone) payed particular attention on what days the rut seems to swing wide open. I have been told from the 16th to the 18th of Sept by several people.

Congrats on your tag. I hear that the Valle Vidal has the largest elk herd in the state.

Me and a buddy hunted there last year with rifel. I shot a 6x6 on 10/08 (opening day) and my buddy shot his 6x6 on 10/11. They were screaming when I shot mine and still making a lot of noise when he shot his.

Good luck,

I have guided on a ranch that borders the Valle Vidal for 16 years and it has been my experience the rut is in full swing the last week of Sept. or the first week of Oct. We start hunting the first Sat. of Oct. and the bulls are generally screaming that first hunt.

Good Luck,
L.T.

Thanks guys. A buddy of mine guided there for a few years and he said the bulls were on fire the 16th of Sept last year. He was supposed to go up and show me around but he drew 16D. So i may be on my own. I plan on hunting the last week of course. Any suggestions on where I should start hunting?

The best time to be there is going to be the last week of the hunt. Because of the warm weather we've had the past few years, it seems like they don't get fired up to good until then. The last couple of years guiding there it just seems like its getting started later and later.

I drew that tag three years ago.Its an awesome place.I hunted the last 10 days of the season which was the middle of Sept. The bulls were just getting fired up.From what I saw I would agree that the first of Oct would be about the best.

Brock,

I would check out when the ML season is and definately hunt BEFORE they do.

Here is the thing. My buddy that lives up there that has guided in there is not gonna be able to make it to show me some honey holes to start hunting. The lucky SOB drew a 16D tag. I may have to go it alone. Is there anybody you could recommend for pack in and out? I can pretty much handle the rest. Any info would be greatly appreciated. My buddy guided an archery hunter last year that tagged on the 15th of Sept. I think the season ended on the 16th last year if I am not mistaken. He said the bulls were really picking up when they were on the way out the 16th. I plan to hunt from the 15th to the 22nd. I will probably get in the 13th to start scouting. The lucky joker drew the Valle Vidal two years ago. He drew the Valles Caldera last year and 16D this year! Anyway, I may end up contacting an outfitter if it is not too late to find one to ease some of the load. any suggestions? email me with info [email protected]

And I thought I was lucky drawing the Valle Vidal last year and 16A this year. :-0 Oh well, better luck next year.

I have a name for you on an outfitter who specializes in the VV area. PM me and I'll send it to you.
