I've been looking around the internet at guide services and outfitters but I am really wanting to hear from you all what is a good outfitter to go with. If any of you know of any openings for the '07 season or work for an outfitter who is now looking to fill landowner tags/openings for the season be sure and reply to this thread!

Comanche Wilderness Outfitters (Scott Limmer) (970)223-5330. All three of these guy are serious players in the hunting industry. There are many good ones out there , maybe some of the guys on this site can help as well. There is one guy out there be sure and "STAY AWAY" "BAD NEWS". He is in New Mexico, Lives in Quaemodo, New Mexico. I won't mention names but you can e-mail me and I will give you all the peticulars on his outfit.( I hunted with him several years ago and I wouldn't go back and hunt with him with your money!!!) I guide for www.sjroutfitters.com

Before I say we are the outfitter/guide service for you need to know more about what you are looking for in an Elk Hunt.

Type of elk you want to hunt - be realistic - most people will say 350+ but if you would be happy with any 6X6 say so.

Type of accomadations??

Type of hunt - get around in truck or wilderness hunt - horseback ect.

Also $ willing to spend - some units in NM LO tags are $3,500 plus with the outfitter / guide fees from $2,000 to $4,000 for 5 days. So a range on $ would also be a good start.

If NM is your choice you could actually put in the draw with an outfitter for some very quality areas. Another thing is you might just consider a muzzleloader elk hunt. In NM a muzzleloader hunt is between archery and rifle - while good rut activity is still going on. You can use a scoped in-line muzzleloader that is good out to 200 yards.

With that said you need to really put more details about what you and your partner would be expecting on a hunt then I could help you better on an outfitter for you.

Widowmaker1 you seem to have a pretty big problem with USO. I'm curious to know why you have such a big problem with them? Bad experience? Used to work for them?

tega52,PLENTY of confrontations with them afield(while we were DIY),between me and my hunting partners, and have seen 1st hand what type of chicken $h!* situations that they put their clients in,and tell them that they're going to have a chance at a bull.I won't go into detail here, but I have seen enough to know that they are only in it for the quantity of people that they can charge, bottom line!

No Gut's...No Story!!!

Is this in the Gila, 34/36, or in the Northern Part of the state. I'm curious because I guide for them in Northern NM, primarily Valle Vidal and I'm very conscious of what my hunters think.

Widowmaker - I think I saw a couple of Realtree's hunts that they used USO Outfitters. I would be interested in knowing more about what kind of outfit they are running. If you have the time, please email me about what went on when you used them.

30inchbuck - I believe we would both enjoy just having quality animals on the wall. big 5x5, 6x6 would be nice. Price Range - $3000 or less per person if that is possible. That price not including the guide tip.

Justin, I have hunted with U.S.O. (5) times, and can tell you many things about their operation.(some good some bad). I also have several friends that have hunted with U.S.O. as well. One of my friends hunted with them during the time they were guiding Realtree and said he would not go back. He said It just was not what it used to be and my friend has also hunted with them about 4 or 5 times his self. He informed me that several of the guides were all fighting among themselves trying to impress the Realtree staff was what I was told. I don't want to paint a grim! picture but I personally have hunted with several of the guys and have seen and experienced their operation first hand. I know many of the guides as well, Most are really good guys but some have Vain!! issues. I have to agree with Widowmaker2 on some things, one being I also believe that they are strickly in it for the money, It is definately Quanity and not Quality.I have sit and talked with George Talhman and If any of you have ever talked with him he is strickly in my opinon all about the $$$. I don't agree with what they represent as a hole for the rest of us hunters. I believe U.S.O. because of their greed!! has ruined hunting for all of us. Since U.S.O versus Arizona, just look at what has happened. Please keep in mind I hunted with U.S.O. years before all the court battles took place. I personally did not have a bad hunt with them during those years, but as time went on I could see their operation might be slipping a notch or two. I believe they lost sight along the way, what we as hunters are all about and in my opinon if we dont stick together instead of trying to stick it to someone we all lose!! Just my opinon!! And No!! I have no interest in ever hunting with them again!! (LTH)

Hey! tega52 you wouldn't happen to know a guy by the name of "Rick Bailey" he Owned or run a lodge in Red River he used to guide and hunt the "Vidal". I met him years ago when he guided and cooked for U.S.O. The Lodge was called "EL WESTERN LODGE". Class AcT!! Great Guy! Thanks LTH.

Justin,
Give me a call, I might be able to help you or answer any questions you might have. I try to cater my hunts to what the hunter wants. Most of my hunts are conducted inn Northern New Mexico. Give me a call and we can talk.

Rick is a really good buddy of mine. I've been guiding with him at the "Valle" for about 4 or 5 years. He had a roping accident last year in August and was unable to guide but he is going to be back with me at the Valle this year.

Good to here Rick is doing well!. If and when I ever get lucky enuogh to draw I will look you guys up! Tell Rick I said Hello!(LTH).

I had a close incounter with USO this fall during a hunt. All I know is that I heard a forked tongue over the radio a bunch. We would ride by their camp and they would say one thing and over the radio came another. Guess they didn't know we had a radio also. Beware of SNAKES.

In regards to USO, I'm from AZ and that should say it all. I'm not mad at the out of staters who got more tags then usual and I hope they did well, but USO showed how money hungry they are in their lawsuit.

Also I have had run-ins with them in the past in AZ. I guess it was a long time ago now in the mid-90's, but they pissed us off pretty bad and they think they walk on water and own the public land, and I'm talking about George and Griz. It happened two years in a row. I'm sure there are a lot of good guys working for them, but that organization is rotten at the top.

And someone needs to point out that Realtree severed their relationship with USO.

Two comments:

The original post is asking who you recommend, not who you hate.

Posts of a derogatory nature about someone's business that names names is against the rules on this and any other website I know of. I always just PM someone when I name names.

Not saying that I like the above named people, just that if these kind of posts are allowed, the website and YOU could be held liable for damages.

I don't have any specific outfitters to recommend, just some ideas. If you want a chance at a 6x6 bull in Colorado, I would be looking at private land hunts. Otherwise, you might look at NM, but of course, you have to draw a tag. Montana is another choice. Have to draw, but fairly easy. Good luck.

Name names that good, Some people need to be brought out into the light of day. I'm sure that there are some good guides with USO but we all know that their are some bad ones too.

Check out KIOWA hunting service in Raton NM. We have used them for three years for drop camps and everything has been top of the line equipment. We told them the area we wanted and they meet us with the camp. They hunt areas I have scouted and do very well. Area 52 of NM is where they hunt mostly. Realistic 260 to 330 bulls on public land. Prices are around the 3,000 mark. Email is [email protected]. TIM is a retired F&G sargeant and everythinG is above board with his operation.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-25-06 AT 10:39PM (MST)[p]Well I've had run-ins with USO guides as few as 3 years ago. They think they own the land and the animals on it. They try to post roads as being closed, and bully people out of "their" areas. If little Georgie boy wants to sue me cause I posted something TRUE about his money hungry sorry little a$$ bring it on.

Are u kidding, this is a forum it is absolutly legal to voice opinions here and needs to be done. If people feel they are crooked they have all the rights in the world to voice that. These people must remember that word of mouth is the best form of advertising and if negetive it can also be the worst.

From the rules:

"* No threads are allowed that single out an individual. If you have a problem with someone, or disagree with the way in which a person acts or what a person has done, take it up with them. DO NOT post it in our forums. Any messages that mention a persons name may be removed."

I am sure this refers to names of memebers on MM as well as those who are not.

I guess the main reason I stated this is because it hijacks this thread. However, regardless of the legality of it, you can be sued. You probably would win if the truth was on your side, however, these guys have deep pockets and you have to hire a lawyer to defend yourself. AND there are ways to get your point across without opening yourself up to legal worries.

For example: "I have had dealings with XYZ company and I would never use them again. PM me if you want more details."

It feels good to "get back" at someone who wrongs you, but someday someone is going to be made an example of. However, I am not your mother, so I will stop acting it.

My post is even a hijack of this thread, so I will stop now.

"Any messages that mention a persons name may be removed."

Key word in the statement above is MAY not WILL. There is a big difference between the two words.

Were you sued at one time by doing this? Or are you a lawyer that sues people for doing this? I highly doubt anybody who is serious about using USO, oh I mean XYZ Company, is on this site or will be coming to this site. So I wouldn't worry about them trying to sue anybody posting on this thread. Unless of course your going to tell on us?

Anyways, I agree, this is hijacking this thread, but what is the difference between this and other sites that have outfitter reviews? Can you be sued for that too?

I did say opinion u can't be sued for stating your opinion everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Buglemin-Good luck on your search. I'm sure this is the place to start with all of the experence here.

As far as Id-ing a specific BAD outfitter. THANK YOU!

Wasting thousands of $'s isn't fun for anyone and the info here could save one or more people a ruined fall. To me, the money isn't as big a deal as the time away from work. Only so many days I can take off and don't want to waste any of them. Also, have you figured out how many more Elk seasons you have left in you. Why waste one with a poor outfitter. I applaud those brave enough to name names.

Only used an outfitter once in the last 25 years cause i decided to purchase horses and not depend on others but the outfitter mentioned here has intrigued me because of his advertisements. He wouldn't like me much cause after i paid him my money and hunted with him, I'd come back with my own equipment if it was good. I'd insist it was a public land hunt. After this thread, maybe I'll book with him after all. Let him be the screwed instead of the screwer.

I have heard good things about Elite. I don't know about sjroutfitters but 30inch is on here a lot. Do a search and also call past clients. One thing to remember is nobody tags 100%.

I used to guide for Frank when he started USO, then George after he bought out Frank. I will say back then he treated me and everybody else VERY well. I have never seen the types of actions some of you speak about. His business was a lot smaller then, about 750,000 acres under contract. Maybe it's the guides causing the problems. I guided east of Chama. The Silvertop, Dominguez, Pauls Park areas.

I know by references and a little hard work you can find a great guide. I have and would recommend the ones I have used to many others that ask.

As far as USO & GT...they can't sue for telling the truth.

From a first hand experience....
Watch out for the "coyote" to grab your game from under you ($$$)!

How's it going, don't know if you booked already with an other outfitter. But if you haven't I can help you out with some bull elk rifle tags. We offer 1X1 or 2X1 hunter-guide ratio fully guided hunts.
