Star,
I've bowhunted this unit on several occassions. It has a good number of elk but the bulls tend to be on the skinny horned side. There are some 300-330 bulls, but that is definitely the top end up there.
I'd reccomend looking at the Fillipito Canyon & Magote Peak & the 15 springs areas. We used to hunt the trout lakes area but it was just way too crowded.
Like most NM units, the key is hiking a mile or two from any road as the elk know the pockets that get ignored and also know how to side step you so patiently sitting in areas where you are finding fresh sign is the most important thing. It is a beautiful area so you will have a blast if you allow yourself to enjoy the experience.
Be especially careful about outfitters in this unit. We have had two seperate ones tell us we were "trespassing" on several ocassions when we knew we weren't. (Yes, we reported it, but I don't think anything every came of it.) They just didn't want us in areas they had told clients they would have to themselves.
