Coues 35A

Hello feller hunters!

I'll be in AZ. come late October hunting Coues! Haven't had the pleasure yet. I'll be flying out of Atlanta GA. heading down to Tucson I believe and well, I could appreciate some tips for the area. I am planning on hunting like for Mule Deer by doing a lot of glassing although I will probably still hunt a bit since I like to do that as well.

I don't have any time to scout and I have a good time just being oudoors. I would however love to bag my first Coues! Will be using a lever action Marlin in .44 mag. I like to stalk close if I can although I can effectively take a shot at 100 yards. Somewhat similar to bowhunting but with a bang! (longer range too)

I Thank Everyone in advance for any help on the area. I greatly appreciate the advice. Is Unit 35A usually productive?

Chef: I would suggest you bring something like a .270, .280 .300 mag etc... with a 3x9 scope on it. You will definitely need to sit down and glass like you have never glassed before. Once you locate a buck, it will not be uncommon to have to shoot 300 yards. I understand you may want to still hunt, but you would only be getting excercise, the deer will definitely hear you coming and sneak out ahead of you especially in the early hunt. The coues will not be up and moving around alot during the october hunt, they get up at first light and feed and bed right back down for the rest of the day until evening where they may be up for a bit feeding again. I am not an expert, but dont want you flying out from Georgia with unrealistic expectations. Feel free to email me at [email protected] if you want a bit of detail on the unit. I will be up elk hunting till monday the 16th, then I will get back to you.....Allen

Thanks for your help guys. Unbelievable your willingness to help! I greatly appreciate it. I'll be sending you an e-mail to get more info.

Looks like I better use a flatter shooting caliber with better downrange energy.

I do have a pair of Nikon Monarch 10x42s. I plan on using these since they aren't too bulky. Will I need more power?

Look forward to your expertise. Nice to see that there are still people out there that will help you with a flat tire!

Chef: it would be better but not absolutely necessary if you had some 15x bino's. The nikon will be o.k. for now. You should get yourself an inexpensive tripod like the brand Slik. I have one and they cost about 40.00 you can put it into a back pack, they only weigh about 1 1/2lbs. You need to steady your bino's and glass from a sitting position. Get a good little pad to sit on. email me if you have any questions, there is alot more to this than just picking out a hill and sitting down.......

Thanks Bura Nut. I'll try to get the tripod. I think I'll have to wait on the 15 power binos though. I can see where the tripod would keep everything from jumping around during glassing with high power.

As the hunt gets closer, I'll send you an e-mail with questions I'm sure. How did the elk hunt go?

Bura Nut,

I've been looking on line at the Slik tri-pods. What model do you use? How do I attach my binos to the tri-pod? (I've never used one) Do I need a special attachement kit or something for my binos? Where did you buy yours? I'd rather buy from a store than on line. Guess I can't stand the wait!

Thanks for your help.

I bought the tripod on line, cant remember the store but will try to find out. I have the Slik U2000. There probably are many models, but this telescopes into about 24" tall or less. It weighs very little and is quiet. I paid around 40.00 including shipping and had it in about 1 week. As to attaching the bino's to the tripod, I would bet you can get a "tripod adapter" kit for your bino's. I have Swarovski's and they sell a tripod adapter. Even if you dont have the adapter kit, you can set your tripod up and rest your binos just right on top and this will steady you. It really makes a big difference when you are steady trying to pick apart a hillside versus free handing the bino's. Again, buy one of the inexpensive pads to sit on, they have a velcro strap that you can strap the pad to your pack so you dont have to carry it. email me at [email protected] if I can help any more. Allen......

Hi,
Chances are that a universal tripod adapter will fit your glasses where the swivel is on the front side. As for tripods, I recommend a Bogen. They are heavier and more expensive, but they are rock solid and will not vibrate in the wind. It makes a big difference when you are looking through the glasses all day long.

Thanks Rawhide!

Hey guys, I just picked up the latest issue of Petersen's Hunting Mag. I noticed that they had a ballistics table in the back as I was at the bookstore so I started thumbing through it. I then came across an article called "the Desert Ghost"...score! I rarely see articles on Coues Whitetail and now I get one. Haven't read it yet but hope it gives good info without all the advertising junk.

Regards,

Chef

If the article is the one written by Scott Rupp, he is hunting on the Jose' Morales ranch in Agua Prieta. The ranch is Elcanjon cito. This is the ranch I am hunting this December. They have killed some monsters there. In 2000 they took a 138 and two 126 bucks off there. It is a good article............Allen

Coues,

Yep! My Topo maps now look like Military Defense plans, all highlighted out and written on! My plane tickets have been bought several weeks ago. Gear is checked and re-checked. Been waiting for this all year and it's finally here! It's going to be nice to be out again. How has the weather been down in AZ? Online, I notice you still push the high 80's in Tucson.

I appreciate the help and new found friends from here at MM. Been hitting the threads at least twice a week if not more! Good luck to the rest of you and be safe.
