My neighbor and I am looking at doing a backpack trip into the Uinta Wilderness after some elk this archery season. I see the season opens up in Aug, but that seems a bit early for the rut to be kicking off. Anyone out there know when the rut kicks into full gear in that neck of the woods? We put on around 20 miles last weekend and it is ROUGH country, saw a little sign and no other people. No shortage of rocks here in Utah, that is for sure. We just don't want to take time off work around Labor day if the bulls aren't going to be really acitve until later on in the season. Also, if that doesn't pan out for us...any advice on where to look in the extended season? We are not afraid of walking to avoid the ATV traffic. Thanks for any info. NDHunter.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-25-06 AT 08:51PM (MST)[p]Utah archery season and rutting elk DO NOT COINCIDE!!! I don't see it changing any time soon either. Ever state around us has the bow season during the rut ours end right when it gets going. That would be Sept.15

It's pretty easy to lose a lot of hunters if you pack in just a mile or so. I have had good hunting of un-molested elk in the wilderness areas. They will come into calling even on the opening weekend wich is Aug 24. but they just aren't all fired up like they are around the 20th of Sept.

Good luck.

BlackTimber is right. Although The Big Bulls are earier to call in pre- rut because they aren't herded up yet. I think you Utah Boys are getting shortchanged on your season for sure. Too bad the DWR is so Rifle slanted. Make the best of it. Sounds like you have a remote spot picked out, Happy hunting.
