Anyone hunted the upper bighorns-unit 25or23-for elk and if so lets chat a bit.

Howzitgoin', Jollyarcher--
Now, I hunt Elk up there, but 25 is down by Lander and 23 is west of Casper--nowhere near the Bighorns. Please elaborate.

Yeah, gettin' your regs mixed up just ain't the excuse it used to be.
Sure did make for a dandy of a hunt, though!
'Course, that'd be back in the days of my young and irresponsible youth.

My mistake.I had hunted the 25 unit for Muleys and had hunted the 38 unit for Elk.Wanted to chat with others familiar with the area.I will be putting in for Elk again in the 38 area as I am learning the land a little more each time I go.Sorry about the mix up on the units fellas!Wasnt thinking clearly.Id like to say I was in the sauce when I wrote it but I cant even use that.Give me a shout.

Hello, I have hunted the third week both trips that I have made and wondered if I should maybe hit the first week at the thought of moving in on a less pressured bull.I realize pressure will be there regardless but thought maybe it would help. What are your thoughts on this from past experience?I know its a draw for Bulls but its pretty close to 100% for Muleys and all those Bulls know is that there are a hell of a lot of hunters on the mountain.Any advice for the next trip?

I'm assuming archey hunting. I always like hunting the second and third weeks, as the bulls seem more vocal and the bigger bulls seem to show there faces more often. As far as an earlier hunt, the bulls seem more acceptable to calling and the wallows are better hunting. All in all, you need to get off the beaten path. What part of 38 have you hunted on your ealier trips?

Ive hunted the Schuler Park area as well as the Wagon Box Canyon area.Ive scouted up around Pumpkin Creek but like you said I need to get down in the canyons as I believe that is where I will find more elk activity. It is my assumption there will be less pressure down in the deep canyons as most guys dont want to walk back up out of them.Ive also set up camp up along Boyd ridge but didnt get into any elk up there.I guess Ive been all along the Burgess Junction area to the North at one time or another. As far as calling I am tempted to just leave them back at camp.It seems everyone and their brother are out there sounding off to these Bulls and Im thinking they are pretty call shy.Just a thought. When I leave them back at camp Ill wish I had them.Thats the way it seems to go.Im still looking for that real hot secluded wallow. One of these days I'll happen across it.Half the fun is looking for it.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-08-06 AT 02:50PM (MST)[p]Well, you definately are looking at some good areas. Wagon Box always has elk and hunters. All the Pumpkin Creek area is good, but you do need to get in the canyons. Yea, the bulls are call shy with bugles, but I have had lots of luck with cow calls (knowing when to use them though), preferably the hyper hot calls. Those wallows are out there and they are darn good hunting early in the year, we have got a few bulls off of them. Good luck on next years draw!
