I am trying to plan ahead for an Elk trip for 07' I am looking for a location where I could buy an over the counter Bull tag, and Hunt with Muzzleloader and have a reasonable chance of taking a Bull Elk...

Has anyone Done this? ... I'm not asking for specific hotspots to take anyones honeyhole... but just to find a State, and locale that would offer a Smokepole hunter a reasonable chance at a Bull...

Thank You!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-09-06 AT 06:53AM (MST)[p]i can't recall ever seeing any over the counter muzzy lis. offered in any state.
but if there was such a state i'd focuse on utah or idaho.
just about any place in colorado offers a good chance at a huge bull,
but you must draw the tag.
I'm going to smack one up by Craig this year.
next year down by Telluride.

There are OTC rifle seasons in Colorado that a muzzy would be legal to use in. However, you would be competing with many OTC rifle hunters.

Next spring, before the first of April, you need to apply for a muzzy tag in Colorado. You won't be drawn, that will take about 3-4 years, but you have to start somewhere.

However, take up the bow and you can hunt many units OTC.

venor, ergo sum (I hunt, therefore I am)

New Mexico doesn't sell elk tags over the counter for ML, but you can buy a Landowner tag for the ML season and stand a reasonable to good chance of harvesting a bull, depending on the unit of course. Most good areas will probably be a bit on the spendy side for ML since it occurs during the rut. Tags are offered on this site by different folks. I hope this helps.

Take care,
Dave
