i just purchased a model 70 winchester 300 remington ultra mag and i was needing some info on a good high powere scope not to expensive but not to cheap either im considering a 4-14 to 40 or 44mm scope any opinon would be considered thanks and good luck on your hunts this year.

The zeiss conquest seems to be a very good scope and resonably priced. If you watch ebay you can come across some good deals.

I happen to shoot a .300 Ultra also. I studied and asked questions and read magazines and cruised the optics counters of sporting goods stores. I ended up with a Leupold VX-II in 4-12, and love it. If the Boone and Crockett reticle would have been out, I would have purchased A VX-III with that reticle. Check them out, you will not be sorry. mtmuley

This topic has been hashed around here for years. The concensus is, and I agree, Leupold VariX III. II's are ok and are sturdy scopes, but if ya got a little more dough, go with the III. Many have talked up the lower costing Zeiss and Swarovski. They are more than the III, but cannot confirm or deny them being better, because Leupold has an outstanding scope and warranty.

Leupold has never failed me personally.

Check out premierreticiles.com I bought a Leupold 3.5x10 with a range comp reticile. It works great on my old 7mm.

I have a 300RUM as well and I went with the Kahles 3.5 to 10. This scope has extreemly good glass and clairuty is un matched for the price. This is the first company and the oldest scope maker in the world and were recently purchased by Swarovski. With the 300RUM you need tough rings and bases. I would go with Talley. They may cost a little more but you will never have a problem handling the violent recoil of the 300RUM.

"We MUST Hunt"

elk_crazy,
I bought a 300RUM 2 years ago in anticipation of an elk hunt. I originally put a Conquest 3-10x44on the gun. The rifle far outshot the scope.I didn't feel like I could shoot that rifle cosistantly with that scope. I then took the Zeiss off and put on a 4-12x50 Swarovski. The scope has the TDS reticle on it. I own a 4.5-14x50 VXIII and I love it, but the tds reticle on the Swarovski alows for accuraacy and CONFIDENCE for me up to 500yds. I know that the Sw. is a lot of $$$$, but so is spending a few grand on a trophy elk hunt and taking home nothing, because you missed. Just my opinion. Hope this helps!

I would suggest you spend as much money on a scope as you did for your rifle. I have a 300 RUM and originally put a Burris Fullfield II on it. I regret having done that and have since replaced it with a Leupold VX-III 4-14x50LR (Boone & Crockett reticle). Even though you might spend $600, keep in mind you will be making a lifetime investment. Happy hunting!

By the way...when did Winchester start producing 300 RUM's? Does this mean they'll start manufacturing the ammo as well?

I don't know if Winchester produces the 300RUMammo or not. I shoot the Fed. Game King 180's and have great success up to 400yds.I am sure that it will shoot to 600, but the extra 200yds are operator error. The only thing that I regret about buying the 300 RUM in Sako is that there is not a fitted Limbsaver for the Sako. Maybe I should just start bowhunting elk and then I could not ##### about recoil.

3.5-10x44mm Zeiss Conquest. The best scope in it's class right now.

I would definitely stay in the 40mm area. Anything above 44mm is a waste on a hunting scope as far as I'm concerned.

No AO's and stay with a 10 power variable. IMHO.....

On a gun with the long range capabilities of the 300 RUM, I believe you want something in the 3-12 power or 4-14 power range.

STXBUX,

You should give that conquest 3-10X44 you took off your 300 RUM to one of your buddies. I'm sure one of them could find some use for it ;-).

A 10x scope should shoot out to 500 plus yards no problem.
If you shoot game farther than that, then by all means go for the higher power rig.

No disrespect meant. But people that shoot game out past 500 yards, don't have to ask strangers on the internet what scope they need. RANGERCON....Out.

Wallhanger,
Make me a decent offer and it is yours. It has no marks, comes with rings and has had 2 boxes of shells shot through it.
