Myself and a friend are looking to book a trip to Africa to hunt gemsbok, kudu, and other plains game. This would be a bowhunt for summer 2010. Does anyone have any suggestions for outfitters?

Send Moosie a PM, he just came from there.

Spear Safaris.. leaving in a month for my 4th safari with them. Great outfit.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-08-08 AT 11:01AM (MST)[p]We just got back from our second trip... and I would highly recomend Samaria Safaris to anyone. If you contact them tell them Ivan said hi. Feel free to contact me for any further details. [email protected]

They have a brand new camp, and a really nice piece of property that has only had limited hunting on it and never any thophy hunting. The trophy potential is unreal...

I will be going back in 2010 to try for nyala. I really like hunting the spiral horns...

While I didn't bow hunt this last trip, I did the first trip (unsucessful spot and stalk). The owner Quinton Hyens is a fairly avid bow hunter himslef and they will do everything they can to get you the animal you're after. They relocated last year to a new place (18,000 ac). They have only been hunting this property for a couple months, and are still working on the bow hunting blinds, but they should be done soon. If they're like the blinds they had on their old place... they will be very nice. They also have a base camp which they hunt directly from, so once you move in you're there for the entire stay of your hunt, unlike many other opperations which move you from place to place...

Here's some of the quality animals that Samaria has to offer. I think you'd have to look pretty long and hard to find a place that can produce animals of this caliber on a consitent basis.

Make sure that you go with an outfit that specializes in bowhunting. Lots of outfits will take bowhunters but it is not the majority of their clientele. An outfit that specicializes in bowhunting will have properly set up blinds with close shots and waterholes that present a broadside shot angle. I researched the subject very thoroughly and went with Ken Moody. www.kenmoody.com. I'll be leaving in 16 days and I can't wait! Some other good outfits I came upon would be Dries Visser and booking either Melorani, Tshepe, or Ha'Nore in Namibia through Bowhunting Safari Consultants.

Good advice BigPig.

I just couldn't bring myself to sit in a blind when there was so much to explore and see. If you want to go spot and stalk, early in the season April/May would be best as most of the leaves will still be on the trees. Later in the year Aug/Sept would be best for blind hunting as the animals will be concentrated around water and you'll probably get a shot at something just about every day.

I've never been to Africa, but I've been to multiple national banquets for the different organizations that have auctioned off an African hunt. Each one has gone for well under the actual value of the hunt. If you were able to identify which hunts were going to be auctioned off during next years banquets, it would give you time to check out the outfitter. It's kind of a long shot, but if you can find one you like, it might save you thousands.

Very good advice from BigPig. Nobody has more experience that Neil Summers of Bowhunting Safari consultants. I really recommend going. I have been on 3 hunts over there and it was awesome!

Good Luck

I hunted w/ Bobby Hansen Safaris in 02 and thought he was great and ran a fantastic camp. Great meals, guides and hunting. They hunted hard from daylight to dark and were fair priced. Not sure how Id have a better trip. Gary

I will echo some earlier comments. Go to a property that specializes in bow huntint. Most do not. It makes a huge, huge difference.
Neil Summers is an excellent resource. Ken Moody is also well know. HaNore is one well regarded property.

You might consider expanding your search to RSA and Namibia. My last trip I stopped in Namibia on the way back from Zimbabwe and had a great time.

Check out www.accuratereloading.com forums for all things "African".

Lastly, be prepared to determine whether you want to hunt on foot or from blinds, or both. Success is higher in blinds, which equals more money to the PH, and to some, success equals a better hunt. You will be encouraged to sit in blinds. I don't mind that, but I want to see the country as well, and insist on some still hunting as well. For many animals (gemsbok, kudu, etc.) this is near impossible, but I do have one archery kudu to my credit taken while stalking on foot. It can be done.

You will enjoy the hunt. Africa is a great place for hunters. I am happily planning trip number 7 as I type...
