LAST EDITED ON Aug-14-06 AT 04:00PM (MST)[p]DOES ANY ONE USE CAMPFIRES DURING BOWHUNTING ELK? PROS-CONS? MY UNCLE AND I ARE TAKING OUR 7&8YO SONS WITH US THIS YEAR AND WE FIGURED IT MIGHT HELP TO KEEP THEM ENTERTAINED.

We have a fire every year and it doesn't seem to get us busted when we're on the stalk. If anything it may cover some of the human scent. Animals are used to smelling fires (at least in Arizona they are). I've been as close as 7 yards from deer (during an elk hunt) the morning after a big camp fire and they still don't know I was there. It all goes back to the rule about paying attention to the wind.

We typically have campfires, it adds to the hunt and is fun to sit around at night while we are telling our tall tales.
One thing we do however is try not to wear the clothes we are going to hunt in around the fire. It does make a little difference. As stated above, you have to pay attention to the wind.
