i just came back from talking to some of the ranchers in area 19 about elk hunting.
they told me that they all went to the G&F meeting to try to get the elk and deer seasons split so they don't run at the same time it puts to many hunters in the area and is causing problems. they also tried to get them to make area 66 a limited quota area.
the game and fish sent them some stuff saying the range is to poor for a increse of deer due to the drought and they put out more elk tags, putting more people in a 5 lb sack.
all the ranches that i normally hunt are going to shut down the hunting due to the disagreement.
while i can go on some state and blm this year my normal privete land spots are not going to be available tell the g&f splits the hunting and cuts the number of people who are hunting at the same time.
i listened to what they are saying and they are right.
the deer are desimated and the elk are taring down all the fences. i see the fence damage from the elk every time i go up there.
the ranchers want the elk season to run first then open the deer after the elk season closes. they want more deer and less elk.
i have been saying all along that the more elk i see in there the less deer.
i would like to see the G&F try to help by spliting the seasons.
if just the elk hunters hit the mountan first they could harvist more elk befor they all run to Gordy's ranch where they can't be hunted.
every thing they told me made sence.
they say due to cwd the G&F is trying to take out most all the mule deer. when they do that the white tails will and allready are moving in. tell just the last couple years i had never seen a white tail on top and now the muleys are shot almost out of there i see white tail often.
this is my long time favorite hunting spot and i see the rise and falls of the deer and elk i spend three days a week on a spotting scope figureing them out. and while i'd hate to go limited quota for deer i think that or even a archery only season would help the deer.
every year i pass a nice young buck to let it grow and on opening day of rifle season someone shoots it.
