Guided Hunt 2 x 1...Who shoots?

I have a question for anyone who's gone on a 2 x 1 guided hunt. I hear it's customary to flip a coin to see who gets to shoot first, but then what? After that when does the other hunter get to hunt? Do you alternate days? Hours? Stalks? Am vs. PM? Do you alternate at all? If the coin flip winner passes on a 300" plus bull does he still have the 1st shot on a bigger bull?

Shootwice and I are going on a 2 x 1 this fall and we're both wondering what arrangements are common. We're great friends, and we want to keep it that way, but I think we both would like to know the what the rules are before we flip the first coin. We would like to agree on something before hand so that we both know what to expect.

Thanx in advance for your input.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-16-06 AT 07:37PM (MST)[p]griz....i ain't trying to rain on your parade, but great freinds know ahead of time...i have always let the 'other guy', shoot first...have a fun hunt, and keep us posted..

LAST EDITED ON Aug-16-06 AT 08:04PM (MST)[p]flip coin--guy who wins has first shot or can refuse the shot and let his buddy shoot if he wants to--if buddy doesn't want to shoot then the winner still holds his top spot until he shoots, he can pass his shot to his buddy for years --after he shoots though(even if he misses)his buddy is now in the driver seat to shoot or refuse the shot---just keep alternating until you get that animal on the ground---it's really not that hard--chris

Well said Chris, you took the words right out of my mouth. My cousin and I are waiting to draw our Nevada tags one of these years and we have already discussed this situation and your thoughts are excactly what we came up with.

When wilderness and archery hunting with my buddy, we just swap days. Whoever wins the coin toss gets the first day and after that we swap.

If you think a coin toss isn't befitting of such an honor, meet yer buddy at the shooting range and do a two out of three. See who can shoot tighter groups at 300 yards...

littlefoot,

We are great friends...but we've never done this before which is why we're asking...so we can know ahead of time and do the right thing. I take it that you've never hunted successfully with any of your friends...since nobody would ever shoot first. ;-)

Csutton7, Nails & Triple.BB,

Thank you for your input. I like the 300 yard coin toss option.

grizzly...geez, you're right. no wonder we always come back 'empty-handed'...only kidding. i didn't mean for you to take my previous reply the way you did. apologies here. i assume you are great friends, otherwise, you wouldn't be hunting together. i guess, truthfully, i don't know what 'arrangements are common'...but, i'm sure you guys will figure out the right solution. again, sorry, and good luck. keep us posted.

I like the AM/PM thing, just decide who wants to go first. So would get the first morning, then the 2nd afternoon, etc. That way you each get to alternate.

Shootwice...if YOU like it then YOU take it. :)

Littlefoot...no offense taken.

If you are good friends or family and can decide ahead of time that's great but if not you need a plan.

I have went on guided 2x1 hunts twice by myself and didn't know the person I was hunting with. Both times I lost the coin toss(and the toss was for who was going to shoot first for the entire hunt). First hunt the other guy killed a bull on the third evening of a five day hunt, I didn't kill anything. On the second hunt on the fourth evening of a six day hunt the other guy didn't feel like going out so I got to kill a spike, He didn't kill anything.

I agree with 257Tony, do the morning / evening thing and switch every day, the coin toss is just to decide who gets to pick the first day. Don't expect the outfitter to be much help on this, all they told us was you guys go flip a coin.

Griz, My partner use a coin toss for the first oppurtunity ( set-up , stalk ,etc.) then we switch every other oppurtuninty and if something happens really fast and the shooter is out of turn so be it we both agree that overall sucess is better than arguing and seeing as I am 1 up on my partner I told him he goes first no matter what. Good Luck

You guys are all giving us great food for thought. We'll have a (30) hour drive from MI to NM to discuss it...I hope we can come to an agreement in that short amount of time. ;-)

a guide who takes two clientes on a hunt and has the hunters flip a coin to see who shoots first is in it for the money, that is an experience I would not like to remember. That is not what it is all about, for a person to hire a guide ,spend youre hard earned money on a guide, the experience should not even include the flipping of a flipping coin

I couldnt agree you with you more.
Could you imagine spending 4000$ on a hunt and not even get a chance to pull the trigger because you lost a coin toss................BS

And remember, if you are in a good area with a good guide, there will be multiple times when you will be set out overlooking an area and your hunting parnter will be taken to another area, so in that case, both of you will have an opportunity to pull the trigger. If you end up at twighlight all 3 overlooking the same park, I would question the dedication of the guide.

You should also have it figured out ahead of time if there is more than one bull. I would just have the primary shooter "call" which bull he will be shooting at, and the other hunter can decide if he wants to shoot the other one.

txhunter58,

Very good point about watching different areas simultaneously. We'll have to make sure that we'll be doing that.

Thanx!

In Colorado we did watch different areas some but in the Wyoming wilderness a non-resident has to stay with the guide so we were together the entire time.

If I were to go on a 2X1 with one of my sons I would tell him to shoot first and if he took an animal on the last evening and I never chambered a round I would be happy that I got to share the experience with him. But a 2 X 1 hunt by yourself is a mistake. You have $4,000 or more for the hunt, $890 for a license, $500 airline ticket, $200 for motel room and tips. Usually for $500 to $1,000 extra you can hunt 1X1. I was an idiot but I have learned my lesson and I won't do that again.

I wouldn't want any first time guided hunters to think "multiple opportunity" is normal. My experience has been that elk hunting is difficult no matter where you are.

Griz

here's another thought who ever's truck you take goes first. this is how one of my good friends and i have done for years but we do alternate trucks every year also! Just a thought!!!

4x4elk,

Do you and your buddy hunt guided 2x1 every year? Have you ever done a 1x1? If so how does it compare vs. a 1x1? Do you both usually tag out? Are your using rifle, ML of bow?

Thanx!

I have always let the my hunting partner shoot first.

I was wondering if you'd try and use that to your benefit...

Maybe I should rethink the "Great Friends" statement. ;-)

I would split up and whoevers day was not to shoot should hang back and be a second caller but.. still shoots if the bull comes to him first. Or i would go on my own on the day i wasnt the shooter. Hunts are too short to play guide/caller for someone when you are the one paying.

I guess my situation was different. Went on 2 on 1 guided hunt last year (with a guide advertized on MM) with my dad. A first for both of us. Had a great trip and he wanted me to have the first shot oppertunity. Ended up with a nice 5x6 mulie. He got an awesome 10 pt. whitie. Now this year he gets first shot. Good luck on your trip.
