Scouting tactics for late season elk?

Just got back from 10 days refamiliarizing with the area I'll be guiding my son in for rifle bull in Northern AZ for his first elk hunt. I'm heading out over Labor day for 5 more days, and will get in a few more long weekends before the season, as well as the entire week before opening day the day after Thanksgiving. I'm planning on a long weekend immediately after rifle cow season to see if I can get a better idea what they're doing when pressured.

Given this schedule, what would be some good scouting strategy? Right now I'm trying to ignore the fact that I'm seeing very few elk (as I expect and hope that they'll be in the area after hunting pressure or snow pushes them down there) and am trying to concentrate on locating good early and late day glassing locations, and mid day still hunting locations.

Any advice for scouting tactics?

I know what its like to try and make sure you do everything right for your sons hunt:

I think the glassing locations are very important, the bulls as you know will be tired and resting up after the rut. Make sure you have spots where you can glass into the bedding areas NW facing slopes etc.....

Water will be another issue depending on the unit, so know your water locations.

Know the unit/weather considerations as to where these bulls will be after snow possibly hits then know where they would be feeding/bedding if the weather doesnt move them.

Thanks, Allen Taylor......

Depending on what unit, you might want to look for very thick areas, or vert deep/steep canyons. That is where they will go when pressured. PM me what unit and I might be able to give you more specifics.
