Need some advise, my hunting partner's Dad drew a Wasatch muzzleloader elk tag after 13yrs of applying. Soon after, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer, doctors give him 6 months. Every week he gets sicker and weaker. Cris and his wife went to the DWR yesterday hoping to move up his hunt with the rifle hunters but with no success they told him there was nothing they could do. Every day is very important to him and being able to hunt 10 days sooner could make all the difference! Any suggestions? This hunt would mean the world to him and his son, one last hunt together. Now is this right, the DWR not willing to work with him, he might not make it to the end of September?

LAST EDITED ON Aug-22-06 AT 03:47PM (MST)[p]I'm a new member but an old lurker. I've joined and am posting to validify the above post. I just can't believe the UT DWR won't make accommodations for our friends father..... actually I'm pretty pissed! We would love some suggestions on a correct path of action, if there is one....

I cannot believe that the DWR is that cold hearted and it makes me sick to hear this.My question is what if it was somebody like Don Peay or another big name figure, would they tell him to tough luck.

If they let handicapped and wheelchair bound kids hunt early, then why not a terminally ill guy?

I would contact every member of the Wildlife Board. They are probably your only chance. I can't remember when their next meeting is or how they could change things, but it might be your only chance. The DWR does have laws which it must follow. I hope you guys can find a way to get him out there early.

When in doubt, GET GEPHARDT!! Seriously, the media can be a very strong outlet for getting things done. Can you imagine the public outcry if this story was plastered all over the news. I would seriously look into it!!

Good luck in your endeavor. I hope for your friends father's sake they make the exception....if not, I hope that he will still be around for his hunt!

Hey guys thanks for your caring & your advise. I just don't understand why they will not let him hunt with the rifle hunters. Your right that hunters in wheelchairs get those special laws to hunt early and get special access and they should,so should a man that have lived for hunting and his family all his life, this is it for him one last time. Termanal Cancer should say enough !

life go's on. I may be a cold heart but exception for one is and exception for all.
you can make all kinds of crap out of it,
there are millions of people dieing continuously.
like wise there will be otheres here, that may not make it to the next hunt.
##### happens guys.
kind of like the wood chipper.
I would like to drive in the big race this weekend,
and hump miss america, just once befor i die.
I better right my congressman,
because gee wilicures i really want to.

We have some very compassionate people on here, not. I would just go on the hunt and take my chances on not getting caught. Yes, I am advocating breaking the law in this situation for all of you ethical members of MM. The DWR gave him a permit to take 1 bull elk and that is what he should do.

If you need help with anything involved with the hunt let me know. Can your buddies dad sit on a horse? If it comes down to it and he can't walk enough on his muzzloader hunt call me and I will bring horses for him to ride. I also know several really good places that he could hunt. If you need someone else to voice stuff to the DWR let me know. Send me a PM. Good luck.

Duckslayer, thank you ! I will talk to Chris and his family and send you a PM. Thanks again.

Duckslayer you are awesome, That is a big help to this guy and I hope all turns out well for him on his hunt. Your a bigger guy then alot and I look up to you for that.

Rutten elk are you kidding! The DWR gave him a permit to hunt within the Law... MY dad drew a Buffalo permit years ago and then had a heart attack two weeks before the hunt.. we talked with the DWR to see what could be done... they said its too bad no one else can use the tag... but you can turn it back in and be eligible to put in again... that was it!

sounds like utah dwr needs a little working over as i see it as bull@#$#, he was lucky enough to draw the tag so let him hunt early like some said he has a tag for one bull elk with his illness and paperwork that the man enjoy his last hunt with his family,so what if it is a few days earlier. it is not like he is asking for them to supply the tag. if i lived in utah i would jump to help out, it is really sad that there are idiots out there that think tough luck to this poor ole boy, maybe we all need to flood the phone lines and news crews to there door step and see what happens with that or get hunt of a liftime a call maybe they can open a door for you. my heart isa out to you and i hope you get to pop a 400 class bull.

Wow.....

ELKMASTER101 and ForkWest, a couple of real class acts.... I know!! Let me go to the Murray ?Make A Wish? and tell Christine that she's wasting her time and to tell everyone to save their money cause the kids are going to die anyway......
""##### happens guys""...... unfrickinbelievable.....

duckslayer, your a stud and welcome in our camp anytime! Thanks for the offers! We'll get him out there one way or another.....

By the way clown (ELKMASTER101), What kind of handle is that? Still learning what one looks like??? You?ve mastered ?Intro to ??.????? Ahhh never mind, I'm not going to waste any more of my time with ya..... Good luck with your kharma bud..... You may want to visit dictionary.com though.

It is a no brainer...... hunt and who cares if he gets caught. I would hunt or have my dad hunt and do everything in my power to get my dad a bull. I'm sure he gave unto Ceasar what is Ceasar's enough over his lifetime- Hatrick

I gotta agree with elkmaster and forkwest. if they say yes to one they gotta for everybody else. it is sad situation but i guess good2getout can now call me one of those "CLASS ACTS"

Only if you're making fun of a bad situation. So what if they let others also, how often does this situation happen? He drew the tag, what does it matter when he goes in?

COme on guys, get a life!!! The guy has the tag and may not live to see the season opener!! Hes not asking for them to give him the tag, just to let him hunt a few weeks early! Quit feeling sorry for yourselves because you never killed anything but a spike....For all you haters, shut the hell up

duckslayer, your a class act my friend.

RUTNHARD, I wish you the best in this hunt. I would gladly help anyway I could.

Hey,guys
Thanks for all your Concern, Support and help! We have a few things in the works. So if things go well we might get Chris in there early! Thanks

RUT,

Count me in for helping out. I have a father who is a current survivor of cancer and his state wont issue him a handicap permit to hunt with a crossbow even though he does not have the strength to pull a bow back anymore due to the cancer. I do agree that if you do it for one you must do it for all but where does the DWR draw the line. I have a friend hunting for his archery bull on the wasatch right now and I'm sure will be happy to help locate a good bull after he is done. If you need help scouting or packing out, feel free to PM me. I would even take a day or two off if needed to help you and your father out. Good luck!

I owe most of you guys/gals an apology for forcing you to read a personal attack, I was pretty fired up the other night. If your heading out to the hills, good luck and shoot straight!

Keep us updated on what finally gets decide. Let me know if there is anyway I can help. My mom is currently fighting her second bout with cancer, so I know how you guys are feeling. Best of luck and I hope all works out for the best!

Just a little Update The Utah Wildlife board approved an earlier hunt for Chris. It just takes going throught the proper channels.

Chris passed away this mourning! He will be missed by everyone that knew him. My thoughts & prayers go out to his family!

I am sorry for your loss.. I wish he could have gone on his hunt. Your family is in our prayers. Thanks for the update.

This post puts thing in perspective for me. How precious everyday is and hunting is a SECOND priority to family.

I would also like to express my condolences for your loss, as well as my thanks for letting me get to know this great man in the short week and a half I new him.

Sorry to hear of this bad news, especially after all the work you guys put in to help out. At least the Board had a heart and was willing to let him try the hunt.

Not to dismiss his passing, but the tag could be turned in, the money refunded tohis family, and maybe some other hunter go tag "His" bull. 2 years ago my friend's father was called a day before the hunt and offered a turned-in Wasatch tag. He gladly accepted, shot a bull, and had a hear attack 6 days later.

Either way, I wish his friends and family the best at this time.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-31-06 AT 05:08PM (MST)[p]duckslayer, I know the family really appreciated everything that you and everyone did! Thank you!..... Thanks for all of the well wishes!

Sorry to hear the bad news. I was really rooting for him on this one. My thoughts and prayers are with his family!!

That's a sad deal, it's too bad the Man upstairs couldn't give him a few more weeks to spend with his family and to get one more hunt in. Wish his family and friends the best.

I would like to thank everyone for their efforts in helping out our family, hopefully this will open the door for someone else that is terminally ill (God forbid) and need just a few extra days to live a dream. (to point out a few special people, thanks to duckslayer, rutnhard, and good2getout)

Just to educate everyone when working with the UDWR, you must get an offical letter from the persons doctor and fax it along with a letter addressed to the Wildlife board stating what your intentions are for the specific situation. A side note I got a hold of the Directors office and faxed it straight to him. Onces the UDWR has received it they will then call an emergency meeting of the wildlife board to review the situation. In chris' case it less then 24 hrs to get approval so they work on these things very quickly. I hope that this may help someone else out in the future.

I hope the family decides to turn the tag back to the DWR, and give some other hunter the chance to build some memories, here is why:

Last year I got a call from the DWR of a reallocated Timp Mountain Goat tag (I found out from other people the person that drew the tag (max points) had passed in a ATV accident a few months before; it really meant a great deal to him). I ended up hunting the hunt with my son, who is not a hunter and never goes with me, be on this hunt he did - we had a blast, it was perfect, I took a fine goat and he helped me pack it out building a lasting memory that I'm guessing will not happen again with my son (he is now 20 and will soon go on a mission).

I often think of that hunter, and wonder if he was hanging out with us and could see the bond he created even for a day. I thank the family that decided to give another family such a good adventure.

Sorry to see this story end this way. My condolences to you for your loss. I was really pulling for this to work out..
I'm sure he felt of your love and caring thru the effort you put out to make one of his final dreams come true.
May god bless you all thru this trying time.
