Somehow I was lucky enough to draw a bull elk archery tag for unit 16A in the famous Gila National Forest which is in Catron County, New Mexico. I knew when I drew this tag that I had drawn a hunt of a lifetime as a resident from New Mexico. I have spent hours researching and learning whatever I can to tip the odds in my favor when I go. Between the NMDGF, Gila Forest Service, scouting, maps, and talking with as many people as I can about the situation, I still don't have a good plan. I scouted it last weekend and saw over 120 elk, but they were all cows and spikes. I covered a whole lot of areas just tring to learn my way around and locate a good bull or at least good sign. The area has had a ton of rain and water is every where, there is a large recent burn area from Bearwallow Mountain to Snow Lake. The burn area is closed to the public for now. So I would really appreciate any information, canyons, trails, or any other hotspots or directions on where and how to hunt the unit. The only directions I have is to hunt the lower elevations and check out the pinon-juniper. Any and all information is needed. Thank you for all your help.

Deffinatly look in the Devils Park area, Lost lake Mtn, and west of the burn on Bear wallow. I have guided 8 bulls over 360 in there. Don't be affraid to go "where no man has gone before". You may also want to look around Round Mtn as well. When hunting Devils Park go on the west side of turkey mtn, there are two awesome tanks in there. PM me if you want some more advice!

I dont know the area , but sounds like your scouting went pretty well. Don't get discouraged in not finding the bigger bulls, they are there tucked away getting fat, probly starting to rub velvet. In the next couple weeks the bulls will start to make their rub areas and start jockying for harems.Good luck , your in the Gila so that always plays nice odds of finding a smoker...

As NMHUNTNUTT said. Where you find cows now the bulls will start seeking them out soon. Also if you found bulls they could or could not be in the same area. The bulls will move. I would not be afraid to hunt the area where you seen the most cows.
