Just wondering how to hunt a early rifle bull, we've hunted this unit for archery bulls but was wondering if we should hunt the rifle hunt as we did the archery hunt, my 12 year old drew the tag

thanx in advance

Get on a hill and glass big meadows and thick juniper areas next to them. Shoot the biggest bull you find. Pretty simple really. Elk hunting in the junipers with hills around is fun that way, especially if they are really rutting good.

I've hunting that hunt the last couple years and its a great hunt. This year it starts a week later and its during a full moon so hunting could be tough. The rut might be slowing down and alot of the bulls will be broken up by then. I don't know how you hunted it in the archery hunt but we hunt the early rifle about the same as the archery(with alittle more glassing)and it has worked for us. Calling still works but probably not as good as in the archery hunt. Like Bret said try glassing from good high vantage points I'd do this in early mornings (if the bulls aren't talking much) and even in midday. We've glass up bulls at noon before if you're in the right spot so you never know. In the evening I'd try hunting close to water that you know the elk are hitting by either siting the water or glassing (if possible) where you think the elk are going to come down from their bedding areas to the water and get to them before they come down. To get a better idea of what to expect on this hunt you sould watch my video called "Dead On" it has an early rifle bull hunt from unit 10 on it including 15 other hunts mostly elk and coues deer. We saw and killed some great bulls on this video. Check it out its for sale on this site. The main thing to remeber is to have fun with your 12 year old. Killing dosen't always make a hunt some of my best hunts (and I've been on alot of hunts) was deer hunting with my dad when I was a kid and it took me 8 years until I got my first deer but I still had fun. Hope this helps and hope you have a great hunt.

HUNT,also look for the biggest bull of your life and count your lucky stars you got THAT TAG!

I do have a web site but its not much yet. I had my little brother make it for me for one of his school projects. If you go to the big game dvd section on this site you will be able to find my video there. It was just put on this site about a week ago. If your not able to find it there you can find it on my site at http://www.deadeyeproduction.com. Let me know if your able to find it thanks.

You guys are in for a good hunt! There are a lot of bulls and some pretty good ones out there this year. One more thing about hunting Unit 10, be ready and willing to move. Don't set up a big, fancy, permanent camp. Go where the elk are. You might try hunting some of the more open country up north or around Long Point in all directions. Good Luck!

Joe:

Finally got to go up and look around. Didn't see as many bulls as in the past, but saw a couple of good 'uns.

Going back after the election this week to set up the trailer and do some more looking.

Hey, thanks for the video you sent, I got to show it at the elk seminar I did for the Arizona Predator Callers last month and I think they were fairly impressed!

We have bagged some big bulls on the archery/early rifle hunts that you guys fortunately have on tape.

Camp may be at a different spot this year, I'll let you know.

Good luck on your hunt..

For those with Unit 10 archery/early rifle tags. Expect a great hunt, but lots of the brusiers will have broken points.

Mr. Martin what would you charge me for letting me scout with you for a weekend in unit 10. I know the unit pretty well but i'm always looking for new areas. i have the toyhauler already up in williams, and i can come any time. As I said before it's my 13 year old hunt, and i'd like to see him get a 350 or better

Don,

Just so you know I've decided to hunt the first 2 days where my partner DT and I hunted for the last couple of years. If I can't find ol Hemlock or Jumbo Jack then I'll be packing up and moving on to another spot about 50 miles away.

I won't be making it up there until late Thursday night. When you find out where you'll be camped let me know and if its not too late I'll stop by thurday night so we can get a plan where everyones going to be.

I'm going up with the wife and kid this weekend so she can hear a bugle or two. She's never heard one yet in person so shes realy excited to go. I won't be able to do any real scouting though being with the family but you never know what you can find right off the road.

Got to go talk to you soon,
Joe

There is also a place just north of cowboy ridge and just east of shafer tank is an excellent area!!!! Check out your map.
