I am wondering about the OTC tags for colorado's second season. I am going to be hunting from a drop camp up around Steamboat Springs and walden on a private ranch. Sould I buy my tag when I get there? I'm wondering if I should buy it ahead of time online? Do the stores ever sell out of them?

As long as it is an OTC unit you can buy a tag at any walmart or sporting goods store up to midnight the day before the season opens. OTC tags are unlimited in number, so I would just buy it when you get there. I believe if you buy it after the season opens, you have to go to a DOW office.

the only reason to buy online is that theres usually a line around the block in most small towns or if something happens and you are running late its one less problem.

Here in Durango the day or two before season opens gets a little hectic and the lines are long.

Not sure about having to go into the DOW office to get one after the season starts. Once midnight hits, that is it until the next season. Just get it online and then you don't have to worry about it unless you don't mind standing in line for a while.

Two friends were back there in CO two years ago for Deer and they saw more Elk than Deer. Went to town to see about buying OTC Elk tags, and the local guy in store said that they were all sold out and couldn't get anymore in time for the cutoff. Do like USA said above, buy it ahead of time and be done with it.

Probably good advice above, but:

Bottom of page one of the Big game borchure says:

"License cut off dates: Unliminted licenses are not sold after these dates. You must buy them at DOW offices:"

then it give midnight before the season as the dates for each season

One retailer may "sell Out" of liceses, but that doesn't mean that others are out. Stop at the first Walmart, etc you see when you enter the state and buy one if you choose to wait. We have never had a problem, but then we always get there 2 days before the season opens.

I would definately buy it ahead of time if you plan on getting there late the day before the season.

Thanks, I think I will. It is just one less thing to deal with when we get there.

I'd get it before hand, the last thing I want to do is run around town all day before the opening day trying to get my poop in a group! I'd rather be in the hills setting up camp and getting ready.

Thanks Bowedark. I'm new to Colorado, but i suppo9se it can't be alot different than Wyo or Montana. I'm second guessing everything right now but I'll just go with it and take it as it happens. Bowedark what tag are you holing this fall? Did Montana come through for ya?

O yes to Montana!! Mules are ready. going bow Elk hunt in week also drew a Vermont Moose Tag & Black Hills deer tag the 06 fall hunt is just about to begain.

Bowedark if you want some help in the black hills, call me. i have a tag too.

Two years ago in Grand Junction on the thrusday before the season they said they were sold out at DOW, talked to some guys who came through Montrose and they bought their tags Friday night at Walmart. Same Unit, they got to hunt elk, I didn't.
I would buy it online.

Over the counter is unlimited, they don't sell out.
Now the stores might actually run out of the tags to print them on but the OTC licenses do not sell out.
