Well we have been hitting it hard every weekend, the bulls are starting to talk, rub and wallow a little bit, me and azsage saw a 300" bull on Saurday that had his G4 broke off at just above the main beam, any of you other guys been out looking for the bull you want to hunt? I haven't found THE ONE yet but it will happen soon. Man in some of the places the grass is 3' tall and water is every where and the mornings are getting colder......man I can't wait!!!!

thanks for an update,, I'm a NR and drew the late rifle season. Since it is a very long day's drive to area 9 from where I live I have decited to drive down the weekend before the season and scout. I have talked to a few people and have some areas that I want to start looking, my ears are open

I was up there as well this past weekend. I saw around 25 bulls, the largest being 340+ which I called in. Most of the bulls we saw are still running with other bulls and quite a few still were in velvet. I did see a couple bulls pushing cows. Right now the elk are primarily hitting standing water, but as the weeks go on I'm sure they will begin to hit the tanks again.

Good luck!

Atta boy there nitro get those bulls educated to the calls, do you have a archery tag in the unit? The only bulls we saw that were in velvet were spikes. Things should really get going after the holiday weekend.

Huh???

Coueskiller has a very good point! Them bulls will start to get call wise after a while. Especially if you use the same reed or hoochie mama day in and day out!!! If i were you all I would take some notes. Don't pressure them too much it's too soon...

just my .02 cents

I say do all the calling you can between now and the hunt. Get them real educated so their will be some big bulls left for the general hunt! Get out every weekend between now and the end of October and call your guts out!

I agree with coues. I have an archery tag in that unit. . . I hope you only educated that one bull.. I don't know how long you've been hunting, and Im sure you're excited to have a tag... but it would probably behoove you to limit your calling to the living room and the truck until Sept 22.

muliesnmerriams,

my living room is in unit 9, what should i do?

i totaly agree with you and cousekiller, the less the better.

i went out this morning before work to hang a camera and seen alot of cows and calfs, 1 300 bull, and a 340ish bull.

good luck on the hunt.

Azsagebrush

Thats a good place for a livingroom!

Thanks a bunch. Going up tomorrow night till Friday.

i don't have a tag, i just live in the "gardern of eden". i do have a few friends that have tags, and it is real funny i'm finding that i have friends that i have never met that have tags too.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-31-06 AT 03:04PM (MST)[p]COUESKILLER

Easy their with the grass. 3 feet! If you judge elk like the grass the 300 bull is more like 260.

It could be the type of grass that some people smoke!!!

AZduke as I said in SOME places the grass is 3' high, but in others there is very little green to be seen at all as for judging bulls your right I'm just some city boy that don't know beans about elk or elk hunting I just hope I can find a nice 5pt. to shoot on opening morning!!!

Unit 10 is where I'm at, and the bulls are starting to make some noise, but most are still in bachelor groups. Seen a few good 'uns and they are out of the velvet!

Some places it looks like the Garden of Eden, others its real sad..Rains were hit and miss in a lot of areas on the north.

Yep, getting more excited each week. Gonna set up the trailer this week when everyone else is gone and spend some quality time looking, glassing and filming some elk.

Gonna be a lot of fun for the "Wildman" who hails from Alaska. Course he thinks 400 point bulls should be everywhere, but once he gets here (Sept. 18) and he sees a few quality bulls, I think he'll settle down.

He is committed for the full 14 days, so I suspect he'll get a chance or two at something he might want to take home.

Good luck to everyone, and if you see me stuck in a mudhole out there, "Don't just drive by", please offer to help. Who knows, the next time it may be YOU in the mudhole and that 18,000 lb. Warn winch on the front of my F-350 might be YOUR savior!

Don if we see you we'll stop, hope you dont get stuck, but if you see my white Duramax crew up to its axles im not offended to be pulled out by a Ford with a winch. Don't know where you guys will be, but good luck with the hunts. We hope we will do well where we always have.

The bulls are starting to talk pretty good and a few of the better ones are herding up cows and pushing the little bulls out, man we saw some awesome muley bucks over the weekend but most of them were in the headlights. Well I did find a couple of 280-300" bulls that we will hunt, man I just hope I can at least take a nice 5pt. bull on this hunt!!! It rained pretty good up there this weekend but it was spotty and really filled up some tanks but others are still bone dry.

Spent the last 4 days on 9. It was about as intense as I've ever seen or heard the last 2 nights. Filmed a 300 class 6 this morning with one antler broke clean off and what was left of his skin around the base dangling under his eye. He was still herding cows. Sat in a lawn chair last night for a couple of hours listening to the show. Awesome. Good luck to you guys with tags.

We are getting pounded right now with the best storm we have probably had all summer. Will sure make it muddy and there will plenty of wallos avalable. Should be a fun hunt.

Well I'm, out of here in about 3hrs to head up and set up camp and scout some more. We got pounded here in Flag. last night with one of the best rain storms I have seen in a long time!!! It should be a muddy mess up there and the bulls should be going like mad!!! Only one week to go, WOOHOO LET"S DO THIS!!!

Later,
Geoff

Well camp is set up and the big bulls have been found so now it's 2 long days at work then off on Wed. morning for 2 last days of scouting and 14 days of elk hunting heaven!!!! Good luck to you other tag holders hope we all have a safe, fun hunt!!!

Later,
Geoff

I'll be in camp tues. night with my ariz. buds and we have 3 tags! I am so psyched! Good luck and take loads of photos.

Well I had set up camp in Unit 10 but then had to bring my trailer back yesterday as it developed a short which caused the 12 volt lights not to work.

Turned out I had a bad battery connection which cost $30 but now I'm operational again.

My hunter is suppose to come in today from Alaska, and then we're off!

Kinda weird, but I've noticed a huge reduction in elk numbers this year (about 75% less than last year according to my notes) in the same areas we've hunted for the past few years.

One of the guides I have used in the past who is guiding up there also has noted the same thing. We've also noticed that the bulls seems have from 10-30% drop in antler development, which no doubt is do to the drought.

He has a bull he estimated last year at around 390 and he's back, but is about a 370 class.

Our 350's from last year are looking to be from 320-330 this year. Gonna have to work our butts off to find a "Real" bull.

Will let you know how we do..

Take care and good luck to all!
