Until 5 days ago rut was going slow. About
10-30 bugles in AM and bulls still in bull
groups. But a few days ago a complete change.
1000 bugles yesterday counting nighttime from
my tent. Better bulls in the herds now. The
basin Im filming in 3 groups 600, 300, and
1oo and some scattered bunches of 5-15. My
355 7x7 that had disappeared in Aug now is
running the 600 with about 60 bulls in the group.
Wallowing is very good with one wallow 5 bulls
hit the same wallow in 30 min Sun nite.
All the better bulls are dirty and brown antlers
on all bulls, but many 4s are very light brown.
No smelling the air or cow rear ends yet. No
strong herding of cows by bulls yet. Little
posturing of bulls to each other. The only
sparring is young bulls that is mostly
playful. The next step is more intense bugling
this week, smelling the air and rear ends and
dry humping, no penetration. This should happen
any day now. Once this happens, bulls will set
the dominance order, and fighting for real will
occur. Then finally around Sep 16-18 mating
will start to occur.Have not seen any archers
yet but will probally see muz hunters.

Been reading about the herd you film since last year...it must be a hard to get to basin since there are no archers! Thanks for the news and the pics!

Nice herd, it should be a blast to see the rut kicking up around a herd that big.

Roy..Good Report.

I was in Unit 80 over the last weekend and bugled with Bull who seemed to be a dominate bull but never saw him... Tried getting down wind but it was too shwirlly.

Did have good success bring in several satelite bulls.. 4x4's and 5x5. I wish I had more time in hills but had to head back home.

When you film are you also hunting? or just filming?

I filmed two hunts last year.. San Juan, UT and Unit 5B in AZ.

Both times, I didn't carry a bow, but had the thrill of a lifetime filming these bad boys in the full rut frenzy.

Midnight.
