LAST EDITED ON Sep-06-06 AT 10:00PM (MST)[p]Hatrick,
The cows are breaking off into smaller groups. I heard some bugling the first two days of archery season, but I havent heard any since. Ive seen some raghorns herding cows but no mature bulls yet. The rut is just around the corner though, and should really kick off here in about a week. Where in SW Montana will you be hunting?

We just came out of there for the weekend and shot two bulls. Nothing too impressive but I called in 5 bulls over the weekend. I passed on a 270 class bull the second day but heck we only saw one bull bigger than that all weekend. We had really good luck with the elk......All i can say though, is that you will probably have better luck letting all the damn people push the elk too you.....it is getting damn ridiculous down there. We ran into 16 guys this weekend! Get away from the roads, and the damn motorized trails and you will be fine....

I'd really like to hear about this trip when you get back. Leaving for the same general area in November and have never seen the territory.
tell me about your trip, crittergitter. More interested in terrain and where you were, where the human traffic was, etc.
Thanks,
HB

To be honest, you are going to have a hard time anymore finding any drainage in the Gallatin National Forest that doesn't have a bunch of people. The only thing it has going for it is that there are a lot of elk. The best advise i can give is to stay away from the areas that allow ATV and Motorcycle access. This is where your highest concentration of people are. If you get even just a couple miles from those trails, you wil be better off. The terrain is steep everywhere in that country, we started hunting south of big sky and then went north of it to kill ours because there were less than half the people....Anything south of big sky, don't plan on being alone:)
