I am heading up to area 94 just west of Big Piney on Thursday with my step-dad who has a moose permit for this area. The area is open to general archery for any elk and I will be bringing my bow. I have never been to the area and was looking for some help on where to start looking for elk. I will also be bringing my rifle because rifle season for deer opens on the 15th(don't know how the elk hunting with a bow will be when the rifles start going off?). Can anyone comment or give me any general info on the area and possible starting points to look for elk? numers and quality of bulls?

Thanks

I can't tell you specifics about that area. If you want to take a trip up to the LaBarge Creek area, there are usually a few animals about. Having archery hunted elk for a few years while a rifle deer hunt is going on, I've found the elk to be amazingly unaffected by it. Have seen and heard plenty of elk bugling while the hills are crawling with hunters in orange.

I have been around Big Piney some in my younger days, hunted deer there last fall and have an antelope tag in 88 and a moose tag in 25 this yr. Im going up to hopefully fill my tags on Oct 5th. I left all my research info at the office but will post for you a couple names of guys up there that might be of help. the Game Warden for the area and a rancher/outfitter I met. Both very helpful. I have gotten some access to several ranches for moose. What unit is your step-dads moose?

I believe my step-dad drew area 24 for moose. We are heading up in the morning and he is going to try to stick a moose with his bow, if not we will return when rifle opens in October. I hope to locate some elk in the area and hopefully they will be rutting. My step-dad has been there a few times the past couple of months looking for moose and he said the oil and gas rigs are really getting bad up there. He said its amazing how much the area has changed since he last hunted it in 1993(last time he drew a moose permit for the area). Hopefully the elk will be rutting and I can stick a nice one with my bow. If not, I misght pick up my rifle and try for deer since it opens on Friday.
