Was wanting fellow hunters to be aware that a friend is currently missing in unit61 in Colorado.Nearest estimate he has not been seen since Thursday afternoon. He was to be elk hunting with his muzzleloader, search and rescue has found his wheeler parked and his muzzleloader in his camp, along with all supplies and truck keys.Would just like to wish him the best of luck and that search and rescue find him soon!
His family arrived today to help search for him, there in Colorado.
Bob Heichel, we wish you luck and pray that you are found safe.
Bob is from Washington State
Keep him in your thoughts,
Thanks gilabulls.

I hate to hear this kind of news . Very scary wish I could help. Please post updates as you get them.

My boss went out with the Montrose posse to look for him this morning. No word if they have found anything. He would have called by now so they must still be lookin for him.

Just heard from my boss and he said they found nothing today. They had 2 helicopters and between 75-100 guys. The guy is in some very rough country and is wearing desert shadow camo which will blend him in very well. All he had was his video camera with him. It has gotten in the low 30s the last 3 nights. All the guys are saying it is going to be a deceased recovery, but they dont think they will find him with the camo he was wearing, unless they stumble right on him. He said they covered a few square miles around his 4wheeler today and couldnt find tracks or anything because of the heavy rain all weekend washed anything away. They called off the search for the night but will be going back in the morning. Hopefully he was a headsy outdoorsman that has survival skills, but we will keep praying that he is alive.

Thanks guys no new word yet tonight, hes very knowledgeable and outdoorsey and we are keeping postive hope.
Thanks gilabulls.

Obviously something is not right... If the hunt was on why was his ML in camp? Why did he not take anything with him to include a daypack? Something stinks!

LAST EDITED ON Sep-12-06 AT 04:34PM (MST)[p]I wish him and his family the best.

Muzz in camp could mean that he went hunting the day ( or a couple) before the actual hunt and somthing happened while he was scouting. I hope he turns up ok...

Does he work for Rob Dunham? It sounds like a guy from Burlington, WA that is missing. Hopefully all is well. Keep us posted.
Shane

GilaBulls,

My thoughts are with you and your friend. May he be safe. Good Luck!

As of right now still havent found him. My boss called and said they are going to stay out all night. He said they have not even found the slightest bit of sign, no clothes or anything off of him. It doesnt look good but KEEP PRAYING!!

Cabo? If you are trying to make a funny joke you might want to think about taking it to another forum. Someone is missing. Not the best time to be a wise guy.
Good luck to the crews still searching and may the family and friends be strong.

Gilabulls, thanks for getting word out on Bob's situation. I trust you guys are making good time and ought to make it to the search area sometime early afternoon tomorrow. If I have this right, this next crew coming down from Washington numbers at about 20 and everyone ought to arrive tomorrow.

Thanks everyone for your supportive comments. If you knew Bob, you'd understand why so many folks are concerned about him - he has friends all over the West. You won't find a man any more honest or so full of kindness and encouragement.

If any of you able bodied hunters local to the area can possibly pitch in on the search, you can check in with the search and rescue folks at Nucla or contact the Montrose County sheriff's office for direction on how you can best help.

This is one of our brothers out here, everyone. Guaranteed he'd be the first one out searching if it was one of us. Please consider contributing to the search effort if you are at all able to.

Thanks.

Anyone know if the Search and Rescue team is flying the helicopters with a FLIR? Curious if this is a viable option in this terrain. Hopefully things will work out for the best.

I have a rifle tag for Colorado 61 BUll.Could you find out what area was he in?.I will be there several days before my hunt.If this isnt resolved by then i would look a little my self...

My very first mountain hunting trip was to 61 back in 1990. I was 19. Deer were still OTC in that unit then. I was completely green and with an uncle who had also never been before. Had a nice buck run across the road in front of us. It was snowing. I took off after him with nothing but my gun and a light coat. About an hour later, my backtrail was covered up and I was completely turned around in low visibility in heavy timber. Needless to say, I had a very hard time not panicking. Luckily I ran across a 4x4 trail and started following it. Finally ran into two hunters that pointed me in the right direction back to the main road. It was not the direction I thought and I came out a long way from where I started. I got educated in a hurry.

So when I read this story, I get shivers thinking that I wasn't that far from being the subject of a search in that same country. That is rough country with few landmarks to orient yourself by, especially if you get into timber. I truly hope they find him. At least weather isn't too bad yet. Unless he had a fatal injury or succumbed to shock, there should still be hope.

Number one thing to remember always, never get out of sight of your camp without a pack with basic survival equipment. You never need that stuff when you expect it. It is always the surprises that get you.

My prayers are w/ him.

This is one of the reasons I ALWAYS carry my gps w/ me w/ extra batteries.

Just wanted to post this link to The Daily Sentinel. The link is to an article from today's paper (9/13). This newspaper article gives information for anyone wanting to help search--the name of the property owner who owns the land, the location of his camp, the name of the Sheriff's department who is in charge of the search and rescue. It sounds like they have been looking for a canine team to join the search but haven't found one. Please contact the Montrose Sheriff's department if you are able to assist. Please help in any way you can.

What a tragic story. Lightning strike. I'm glad they found his body for his family and friends sake. My prayers will now be with them.

Steve

am so sorry to hear the bad news...thinking of his family, as i am sure many of you are.

Sounds like he was quite a was away from camp? Any ideas why he would be so far without his gun? You would think if he was spotting or scouting he would surely take it with him. It almost seems that he could of been struck and wondered off not fatelly wounded. Just seems wierd. One thing about it is that you don't have much control over a lightning strike.

RIP. What a tough time for the family. Lord, bless this family with Your Heavenly Grace and help to see them through this tragic time.

Man what a bummer start to the hunting season here on MM. May you all take care and kiss your loved ones good-bye everyday. It could happen to anybody at anytime.

What a sad end, but at least he died doing something he loved, without alot of pain. that is what i pray for when i go. Reguardless of where your at when its your time its your time. Condolances to his family and friends.

What an unfortunate situation. As everyone else has said, enjoy your time on this earth and make the most of your time with family and freinds. Life is a precious gift and one not to take lightly. Make the most of your upcoming hunting season and be thankful for what we have. May God Bless Bobs family and friends.

tragic ending to an already terrible situation , every year something like this happens ,I never met youre buddy, but he sounds like he was an awsome person,I would like to give thanks and appreciation to the search and rescue teams that searched non stop for him, they did ,as tragic as it was , find him, and in that give his family closure. Godbless all of you this season on youre hunts , and god bless the family of are fellow hunter

Very sad indeed.
We all have the same disease. It is death. One per customer. Please make sure you are ready to go. We don't know what the future holds. But you can secure your eternity!

My prayers go out to his family and friends.

Please be careful in the woods. Let someone know where you will be. And when you'll be back.

May he rest in peace. My family will pray for him tonight around the dinner table. I hope his family will be okay. I'm sure he must have been a great man for the Lord to call him up early.

My regards to those on this site that get the info out so fast. This truely is a great nation full of good people.

gilabulls, it is truely sad to lose such a fine person and my thoughts and prayers go out to you and those close to your friend. I'm sure his family is in total shock. People like that have many "best" friends that probably would have a huge emotional black hole from this loss if it weren't for all the fond memories I am sure he left behind. Sounds like we should all be so lucky to have such a friend. Perhaps we all could strive to be a friend like him to those close to us. God bless. Bill

To Bob's family, close friends (Dave, Steve, Byron, etc):

The entire hunting family mourns the loss of one of our own. Our condolences.

To everyone else out there: Remember, when something is causing you grief and you are thinking you are not being fairly treated, keep it in perspective.

Gilabulls,

Our thoughts and prayers go out to you, his family and friends. It sounds like you were blessed by having him as a good friend. May he live forever in your memories.

Rich

Sounds like he was a very good man! My thoughts and prayers will also be with his family and friends. Life is very very fragile, let each of us try and live each day as if it was to be our last. We can make a differance.

borntohunt

My condolences go out his family and friends.

All I ask when it's my time, is to go quickly and at peace.

To those that ask why he didn't have his smokepole with him: wouldn't carrying a metal object act as a lighting rod. I'm not from lightening country, but did spent a couple of years in CO.

MM

My blessings and thought to his Family. It could happen to any one of us at any time especially those of us who enjoy the solo hunt experience. makes you think.

Well, Thanks everyone for your heart sent prayers and thoughts,we found him wednesday the 13th around 3:00pm. Over 25 friends from Washington came to Colorado to search for him.We would not leave until he was found! As said above by other MM members he was struck by lightning,he was on a knob glassing when the incident occurred.A search dog was the one to find him, which was very fortunate he was in bad shape. It was said that the change in his pocket was melted together.
It is said that he had his elk located and was glassing in anticipation for opening day to arrive. It is believed the incident took place the previous thursday evening the lightning storm came followed by 10 inches of hail and hours of rain at a down pour. Roads were washed out in places where the water was eight feet deep headed down creek drainages.
The weather was a major factor in his recovery because his sign had been washed away.
We send a very special "Thank You" for all the search and rescue involved, also the several counties that had sherrifs deputies there to help,You guys are truely the greatest!, setting your lives aside to help find a stranger,Godbless each of you and your families!
Bob Heichel will be missed by all who knew him!
Bob was a son,a brother,a husband and a father.
Our prayers go out to his family,

Rest In Peace Bob.
