LE Elk Question of the week

Okay how many of you boys and girls will be out and about this weekend tromping through the hills without a tag in hand blowing on your cow calls and trying out that new bugle you've been practicing on in your truck on your way home from work everyday.

The reason why I ask is, if you're out trying to help one of your buddy?s that has a tag in hand that's great, but if you're just out there making noise in the woods most likely all you're going too accomplish is screwing up one of us lucky buggers that has a tag. I think the last thing anyone of us wants to do is call in another hunter, especially if that hunter is only carrying a video camera. Come on guy?s fess up, how pissed off are you really going to be when you bugle in some dude with only a camera.

Now with that said, I don't want to come across like some of the other posters on this site, but it's hard enough to find a good bull without all the other people beating the brush and putting all the unneeded pressure on the animals. The last time I check it's a free world and you can do whatever the hell you want to. All I ask is that you please have some respect for us boys and girls that are luckily enough to have a tag.

I wish all you hunters the best success during the hunt be safe and make sure you find a safe place to hide if the lighting starts up. We don't need anymore good people like the gentleman from Washington not making it home alive this hunting season.

Cheers.

You had better not let on as to where you are hunting or you'll have everybody up there trying to call you in!!!!
LOL...
Good luck with calling in the "real" bulls!

I usually don't post negetive comments, but telling me and everyone else to please stay out of the hills, just because you want to shoot a bull is crap. I did not go to Iraq for a year and a half to protect mine and everyon elses freedon just to have someone to tell me that. Please tell me what unit you will be on so I can make sure I am there bright and early screaming on my call.

What a joke!!!!!

I have to agree with the brat on this one. I am not going out this weekend because my son has a football game, but next weekend is a different story. I try to avoid places where there are vehicles parked, but I am not staying out of the hills just because there is an elk hunt going on. I enjoy calling elk during the rut more than the hunt itself and look forward to September every year. You should be able to tell the difference between a real elk and a most hunters anyway. In 18 years of calling, I have never walked into another hunter. Most hunters can't make the sounds that a real bull elk can make and don't usually call from the locations that an elk would.

So, good luck on your hunt, I hope you get the bull of our dreams.

Sorry, gotta agree with flyfish on this one. I take a lot of trips back to my home state of AZ, as often as I can every 4 to 6 weeks or so. I'm also currently spending as much time back there as possible scouting for a rifle bull elk hunt this year. However, I always plan around big game seasons, even when scouting for my own elk hunt. I would hate to be responsible for blowing some guys elk, antelope, or deer hunt because I'm out there stomping through the woods blowing on a predator call, or blowing some guy's stalk on a nice bull because I'm out scouting for my season which is still 3 months away.

There's PLENTY of time to work around the seasons every year. It's not about "freedom", it's about common courtesy. Some of these elk tags we're talking about are once in a lifetime opportunities. Why risk blowing something like that for someone?

Yeah, we all have equal rights to be out there obviously, but is it about rights, or hunter courtesy?

I can tell that you are not from Utah. If I had to wait until there weren't any hunts going on, I would never be able to scout after mid August. And I also wouldn't be able to call elk because they are being hunted from mid August until late October and then again in November. So according to your rational, in Utah at least, I would only be able to scout before August and after November, sounds awesome.

Thanks Brat, glad you made it back safely.

Enjoy the time outdoors. Relax. Have a fun. I apologize for screwing up anyones hunts. Good luck! I hope everyone gets a chance to enjoy the rut...that is if it ever starts! x(

Wow, you guys up there in Utah must have it made with such liberal hunting seasons....

Just pulled from the Utah DNR site though:

Elk
General archery: Aug. 24 to Sept. 15, 2006
General season spike elk: Oct. 7 to Oct. 15, 2006
General season any bull: Oct. 7 to Oct. 19, 2006
Muzzleloader: Nov. 1 to Nov. 9, 2006

Seems to me like there's plenty of time to be out in the woods between hunts.

Or am I missing something?

So you are telling me, Only people with limited hunting tags should be aloud in the mountains during the hunt, or that only people with tags should be able to enjoy the Elk rut, and being able to see it in full swing. It is ideas like this that give hunters a bad name. It has everything to do with freedom. People, weather, the right gear its all part of hunting. That's why they call it hunting not harvesting. If you don't want anyone around on your hunt you better buy a high fenced harvest tag. As for me I will be in the hills calling elk with my wife kids and dog with or without a tag, thats what you call freedom!!!!!!!

Oh ya and I will have mine and my kids fourwheelers up there making noise just to make it a better hunt for you.

OH ya and daverp you forgot about all the limited entry hunts between the general hunts, That's what you are missing.

THis is just in the area that I hunt:

September 16 - 26 Limited Entry Any Weapon Elk
September 27 - October 5 Limited Entry Muzzleoader Elk

So that leaves October 6th to be able to get out and do some scouting before the general elk hunt.

August 19 - September 15 General Archery Deer
October 21 - 29 General Any Weapon Deer
November 11 - 17 Limited Entry Any Weapon Elk (Late)

So in the area that I hunt the only days that I can get out (other than when I am actually hunting) after 8/19, is 10/6, 10/16, 10/17, 10/18, 10/30, 10/31 and 11/10. So from August 19 to November 17, I can be in the mountains (other than when I am actually hunting)a total of 7 days. Thanks for the offer Dave, but I think I will go whenever I want.

armybrat,

Let's get at least one thing clear, huh? NOBODY has TOLD you that you cannot go out and do whatever you please at any time of the year, as long as it's legal. Stop being so damn over dramatic. The guy ASKED if perhaps people could avoid the woods during this time.

Stop crying about having your freedoms restricted over someone asking a simple question. You're acting as though the guy is proposing a law that says you cannot be out in the woods without a tag during hunting season. Holy cow, how do you react when someone wants to merge into traffic in front of you?

You guys do what the heck you want. Some states will be different than others obviously so giving the courtesy to other hunters to stay away during hunting seasons may not be entirely practical. For myself, I feel better knowing I didn't screw up some fellow hunters hunt. But, I'll tell you what, let me know when you're out hunting, and I'll come out and do all the things you're threatening to do because someone asked you for a favor....

Two words for you armybrat, anger management. Nobody attacked you here, so calm the heck down.

so he still hasnt told us what unit he is going to be hunting. Well for me im going to be up there bright and early saturday morning. But you wont find no elk call in my truck. ill have a pack of hounds with me and hopefully ill find a big nasty bruin to chase down.

THAT OUGHT TO RUFFLE SOME FEATHERS!!!

OPENING MORNIG I THINK I HEAR A FAINT BUGLE,WAIT A MINUTE,THAT AIN'T A BUGLE,THATS A FRICKEN HOUND,WAIT A MINUTE,THATS A PACK OF HOUNDS,LOL!!!

PLEASE LET US KNOW NEXT WEEK HOW MANY 380"+ BULLS YOU CAUGHT & HELD AT BAY!!!

THE ONLY bobcat THINKING:WITH WEATHER LIKE THIS I'M STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHO'S GONNA LIKE IT THE BEST,THE HOUNDERS OR THE BIG STINKY BULL HUNTERS???

I think it's about how you were brought up. In talking to people over the years it seems as though the Johnny come latelys seem to behave a lot different than the people that have hunted since they were a child. My dad would have wooped our ass if we would have interfered with somebody else hunting - I wouldn't even remotely consider it. i go along with the author on this.

I think I understand the nature of the negative in any of this commentary. To intentionally screw up someone else's hunt is, for most, unthinkable. This type of guy will not be in our camp forever after. The insinuation of wrongdoing on this level is offensive to our ethics(i.e.-what we know is right and wrong), and as such, our reactions serve as positive testimony to defend and preserve that which we value and would pass down to our children.

Very true arroyobuck. It takes me 12 years or better to draw the elk tag I am after. Maybe the horn tooters could at least go to a unit that wouldnt be a hard draw for us lucky people. Then again most of the uncareing people are too lazy to hike into the areas that I hunt.

Not talking about intentionally screwing up anyones hunt but, I am not going to stay away from filming bulls and having a good time just so you can have an easier hunt.

I wonder why everyone should stay out of the woods for the LE rifle elk during the peak of the rut, but it is okay for you all to scout during the pre rut LE archery elk hunt. It is really hard for me to feel sorry for the LE rifle elk hunters. Both the archery and muzzleloader tag hunters have to contend with general season hunters in their hunts.

Getting out and filming or glassing huge bulls is all many of us will ever get to do. I just hope we all can have the ethics to not intentionally screw up another hunter. Good luck to all of you with tags.

> I am
>not going to stay away
>from filming bulls and having
>a good time just so
>you can have an easier
>hunt.

Of course not...................

Ok time to kiss and make up, nobody is trying to deprive anyone of their freedoms, I think the basis of this thread was to remind everyone to just use a little common curtesy in the hills....

Flyfish,
Did you spend any time on your unit during the archery hunt?
I sure hope not or you just killed your argument.
Thanks for offering to save me gas money but I will be heading to the hills too.

You wait 12 years or more to draw a tag in the units that are known for huge bulls. That is the same reason people are up there filming and taking pictures of the huge bulls.

You could always put in for a unit that is not full of big bulls then you would not need to wait 12 years for a tag. and then there might not be as many people filming the smaller bulls.

I have never seen a person screw up someone elses hunt on purpose. people just want so see some big bulls and the rut is the rest time to see them. Maybe move the rifle hunt out or the rut season and then you don't need to worry about people taking pictures or filming the big bulls.

Hold on just one minute!

Tick...tick...tick.

There... I had to make some popcorn, and hit the head, this is going to be fun to watch. :)

Grizzly

I second moving the rifle season out of the rut. Maybe then it wouldnt be a 12 year wait to draw a tag, and maybe more tags could be issued. If more tags are issued, more people out hunting instead of videotaping. Problem solved, no more whiny rifle hunters.

whtelk,
If you are sooooo far away from the lazy a$$ uncaring people, why do you care? I bet most of the people w/o tags are not going too far from the roads because they don't want to screw up a hunt.

So I suppose that it's just rifle hunters that would like to be left alone during the hunt and the rut? Archery hunters don't mind woods full of people educating bulls and pushing elk around?

Guess I'm going out scouting during archery elk season next week then! Woohoo! Thanks! ;-)

Okay mister smarty pants. If I have a general season elk tag that stats Oct. 7th. when can a go scouting if the archery hunt runs Aug 19th-Sept. 15th. LE rifle runs Sept. 16th-26th. Muzzlelosder runs Sept. 27th-Oct.5th.

From what you are saying, only people with hunts going on should be in the mountains. So in the past, or next year, when you don't have a tag, I hope you will not venture into the hills during the fall.

Smartypants? What, are we in friggin' 2nd grade now?

Don't know in what state you're hunting that has a month long archery season for elk, but as I said, some states with liberal seasons may make it impractical to not be out in the woods. If it's not reasonable to be able to avoid a season in your state or area, don't worry about it.

"So in the past, or next year, when you don't have a tag, I hope you will not venture into the hills during the fall. "

Don't worry about it, I won't, just like I won't be doing so this year during the early elk seasons, and I DO have a late season tag that I've been waiting on for YEARS, AND am having to work around being out of state. Yet somehow I will still manage to get as much scouting time in as I need I think. But I'll tell you what, if nobody really appreciates the effort, I could change my ways. I haven't exactly taken a poll, it just seemed like the sportsmanlike thing to do to me. *shrug*

Man, if it's reasonable, do it if you want. If it's not reasonable, go out and do your thing. I swear, the way some of you panty wearing ninnies are carrying on over someone asking for a simple courtesy, you'd better suited to joining a knitting club than hunting....

Just more of the modern "me" generation displaying their true colors I guess.

If you are scouting on a unit that has a LE hunt, then you must be scouting for spikes? You just looking for that 40" spike? You can easily locate the spikes/cows earlier in the summer.

Armybrat, Thank you for your service. I know things are a little hecktic in Iraq, but you're home now so calm the F down. The guy is just asking for a little respect.

Why don't you tell me what unit you're going to be filming and calling bulls in so I can be there bright and early blasting grouse.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

ME generation?, listen to the request DDDDDDDAVE, if you don't have a tag, stay out of mountains with your bugle. Sounds pretty selfish and only MEEEEEEEE to me. What do ya think Holier Than Thou Great Hunter? Just for the record, I do everything possible to avoid other people when calling, and have never disrupted anyone's hunt. But when someone tells me that he is more important than me, and his enjoyment is more important than mine, I simply have problem with it. So take a look in the mirror before you start making statements about the ME generation.

257 - just another hunter telling other hunters what should be important to them huh? Thanks, I'll check in with you before I go out to get your approval on anything I may want to hunt. Sounds like another ME statement, "I don't do it so you must be stupid or crazy to enjoy it".

First of all, I didn't know that the elk stayed exactly where you see them during the summer, thanks for that info.
Second- I hunt deer in an area that has a LE hunt so maybe I can shoot a 40" 2 point.

Hey why dont you go blast some grouse in Iraq shotgun red and see how fast you can calm the "F" down. Maybe those people out there with there special elk tags should show some respect for those people trying to photograph and video elk and not go into the woods. Works both ways dude!

Listen Mr. Ninny,
Talk about carrying on. I think you have wasted more space on this thread than anyone. I'll bet your one of those guys that isn't a real hunter, just a ME generation wanna be.

BTW,
I will be in the great outdoors with my dad, brother, sons, nephew, and grandson enjoying what God gave us. So say what you want, my family and their enjoyment is more important to me that what you think. I won't be out there to mess anyones hunt up, but i will be there.

"Talk about carrying on. I think you have wasted more space on this thread than anyone."

With perhaps one notable exception, YOU. Going for a record for the biggest number of meaningless posts in a thread are ya? Keep it up, and avoid meaningful discussion. It is really very telling.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-15-06 AT 04:57PM (MST)[p]Tell me when you start the meaningful discussion, because everything you said is meaningless.
If you notice, I said space, not number of posts. Your posts ramble on with no meaning. It's very telling of your mentality.
Thanks for the lively discussion(lively but meaningless), but I am heading out to spoil a hunt for someone.

Really I am heading out to help a friend on a moose hunt. I hope thats okay for all you Dave because I don't have a tag. I will try to be very quite and I promise not to blow my bugle too much. If he scores I might even post a picture for you.

Looks like Dave is out recruiting for his club.
Not only is he a member, but he is also president.
Congrats man.

I guess it is ok to do what ever you feel is right. Like me! I bow hunt and really dont want to have people without the tag tromping around every ridge educating the bulls, but whatever have at it!
I guess then it is ok for me and my whole bow hunting gang to head up into prime elk hunting areas during rifle season and shooting about 5 cases of clay birds and not bother any rifle hunters, right? Highly doubt that. Hey thats why freedom is so great...it works both ways...GRIN

Ping...Pong...Ping...Pong...

This is fun, but I'm starting to run low on popcorn.

Keep it up. :)
