Looking to do '07 Early Rifle DIY bivy hunt. Any reccomendations on which is better "foot access", F.C or S/B? Anybody have any decent spot's to start from? Don't mind walking in 3 - 4+ to set up base camp and biv from there out. Don't need monster bulls, just decent chance of decent bulls.

Thanks,
Ed

Neither are the best "foot access" areas. But you may want to consider getting flown in. I spoke to the people at Middle fork aviation, and it really isn't that expensive.

Decent elk hunting can be tough to find with foot access in those areas....BUT...it is there. Pop me an email and I'll tell ya what I know...which isn't any huge secret, but may be useful for ya.

Consider flying into the FC. There are like 11 airstrips there. When I did it in 93, it was only $300.00.

Tip. Get there before the season and put a bull to bed. It gets pressure even if its a 27 mile ride in.

I have done the FC backpack DIY before..by plane

You need to pick an easier animal to pack out. Elk are BIG when you are on foot that far from civiization. Those wildernesses are tough to hunt. Try a deer wilderness deer hunt. Can't draw a controlled rifle bull tag,If you want to kill a bull get an archery tag for one of the general areas and go hunt them. I am a rifle and a archery hunter, the archery hunt can't be beat.(for over the counter) Let me state one more time.... there is nothing flat in that wilderness....

good luck with whatever you do.

with a buddy It could be fun. I had a blast being in the wilderness in November.

good luck

I hiked in about 7 miles and pulled a mule for the pack out. Like others said the Church is very vertical and I would hate to pack out a bull solo. A fly in is a option but, like a trailhead it will be a starting point for others as well, but it should reduce the pressure some. You should find bulls 3-4 miles from most roads.

Thanks for the advice- keep it coming. I spoke with two different aviation co's and they can certainly fly us in/out - very reasonable. From what Middle Fork Av. says, like anywhere, the immidiate area around the strips may get alot of pressure (especially on opening day), but if you hump 2-3 miles from the strip you're generally past all but the crazies (like most of us), but not as far as the outfitters. I'll be w/ a buddy, maybe two, and we've all done the Bob Marshall a few times, this looks to be about the same- steep, steep, up and up and we kinda like that. I figure I'll save the flat hunts for when my knees won't do these anymore, I'll at least be able to say "I remember when I...". Anyone ever been flown into Moose Creek strip?

Thanks to all again for the help.
