Hello fellow hunters...I am about to go on my first elk hunt. We are going to the Selway units in Idaho...close to unit 20...I was wondering if anyone could give me some information about this area.. We will be hunting on Oct. 1 06...It seems like it has been very warm in this area until recently. I was wondering if there will be any rut activity around Oct. 1...Can you tell I'm a rookie! Any information will be appreciated...I have just found this site and I've enjoyed reading a lot of the comments in this forum...Thank you

Steep and thick if you are going anywhere around Fog Mt. off the Locsa river. Spose there will always be a few still talkin'.

The first thing I would do is become a fan of a decent driver, then, find a friend willing to fallow you into HELL. That area is what we call steep and deep. Lots of sign, but tough hunting. Look deep inside your self and keep on pushing. With good partners to lean on, and to drive off of each other, you will have sucess. That is a good hunt, a safe hunt, a chance to learn, and hopfully a chance to get a little bloddy. By the way, that is the best time to go. You will hear more bugling than you ever thought possible. Good luck.

I was thinking, If you have any idea how to play the wind, you will have a shot at success. You will be in dark timber pretty much the whole time. So, be hunting the entire time. The time you let your guard down, or just start walking instead of hunting, may be the time you see something. At that time it will be to late, and they will be leaving.

Good luck, be safe and PRAISE THE LORD
