This past weekend I had the opportunity to help my Disabled buddy go out elk hunting. ( he has advanced muscular sclorosis.)
Here is the story,
We got up to the uintas on friday night trying to beat the storms and set up the trailer, the clod was really bothering my friend but he hung in without a complaint. We decided to try and get to some clearcuts a way back in from camp and my buddy said he could probobly make it.
Woke up saturday morning and man was it COLD. we bundled up and headed out of camp. We alternated from him walking a bit and me pushing his wheel chair,(you forget how far places are until you have to push someone to them)
We finally reached the clear cut and settled in out of the wind. I could tell my friend wasnt very comfortable was was sticking with us. I started to cow call a bit and pretty soon a cow elk walked through our clear cut. It seemd as though all the discomfort my friend was experiancing seemd to just go away he was all smiles, he said he didnt think elk were that big. we stayed for a while longer and a small bull came trotting through our little clear cut but he couldnt get his gun up in time to get a shot. (really didnt seem to matter he was disapointed but hey he saw a bull) shortly after a bigger bull came in chasing the smaller one and BANG.. my friend got on him and placed a shot in the upper shoulder. ( he almost tipped out of his wheel chair too) we got up to the bull a nice 5x5 and all the cold and pain left my friends eyes and he wouldnt leave until the elk was all cleaned and taken care of . i had a friend in the area with horses and he volunteered to get the animal out for him.
this experiance was extemly satisfying and humbling i sure hope he will be able to go next year id do it all over again just to see the look in his eye.
and thank any gods you want im sure glad some elk cooperated with us.
