NM 6C

I killed a cow Sunday morning(17th) and saw two other bulls and a handfull of cows, it was a bugling frenzy where we were at. Vinihunt will post pics for me when he gets back, I think he is helping a family member on another hunt. Go to the archery forum and look at P&Y cow for the little story...Its a good year and the rut is going full boar strong ....Like to hear some other NM success elk hunts....NM

Bulls are talking!! It has been nice with the rain but it is slowing up a bit. Had shots at two bulls here on the rez but couldn't seal the deal. What hunt you have?

Lionking , I was off of 27 on the north east portion of the unit, not very many hunters on that side so it was real nice and no hunters where we were at.It never rained over the weekend but got friggin cold. Yeah the bulls are really talking now , had I had a bit more time off from work I may have tried for a bull, actaully , I'd still shot the cow, thats just how I am I guess.....

Oh yeah ,I had the second bow hunt 16th - 22nd. My partners are still up there , hope they get another one...

Kool deal!! Hope they got them an elk. It has been tough to get up there and hunt but actually managed to do it had my son with me the whole time so it was exciting for that reason. Plus, he is a pretty good cow call with just his voice. Had them bugling but the two that I had a shot at were in the thick and not talking. Where Vini hunting at? I was hunting off of Forest Rd 144 U....Chicoma down on the Santa Clara rez side.

lionking, vini was in a land owner antelope hunt with his little boys. They did good too , got a nice antelope and had his little guys along side so I know he was pretty pumped....

The Elk were talkin but a bit call shy.... I could not get them to come in at all. I saw a couple of bulls but could not get a shot. I did bag a small buck! I'll take that I guess?

I have to say this year there were not to many hunters in the Dome area. I think the proclimation disclaimer might have scared some people off.

Your right what was I thinking???!! Spaced out, I guess!! So you got the buck in the Dome area? Congrats!! Where are the pics? It looks like there was some snow up on the higher peaks this morning. Went for a cruise this morning with my son and heard some bugling...I had to come back to work. Heading up to the higher country this evening for an evening hunt should be banging with elk.

Yea a 3X3. 56 yard shot. Quartering away shot, the arrow broke in two just before the fletching, a complete pass through. I think what happend was that when the arrow was passing through, the deer jumped forward when he felt the arrow. I think his shoulder/leg might have snapped the arrow? Wierd. The deer went maybe fifty yards and died within ten seconds. Dome area buck......

Hey NMHUNTNUTT1 I was wondering if you camped off of 27 in a tight canyon where you would pass a corral and go south a bit. In the cliff area? Just wondering cause I was up there on 27 doing some work and seen a camp in that area and thought it might be yours. White camper....brown, maybe grey, truck with quad runner in the back? Just wondering.

We were off 27, had two trucks there, mine is a green 95 ford ext cab f150 4x4 and the other was a single cab 3/4 ton ford 4x4 white and brown and it had a quad on the trailer. We were actaully on the mesa above the canyon....

Larry Francisco told me you stuck a cow, awesome! Way better then I did in 52, not much luck. Wind was tough, snow killed some of my best spots not sure why. Never had a shot at a bull

Hey Don , long time . Yeah I got a real nice cow, 235lbs of meat , I picked it up yesterday , it filled half of my freezer.
It sure felt good . I hadn't hunted elk since the last time I saw you.I spoke to Fransisco yesterday and he said you and your dad had a bit of a rough time, but you killed a heck of a good bull last year and 3 bulls in a row so it was better that you didn't get another one , you were getting too spoiled eh , lol.Vinihunt posted a couple pics of my elk in the archery forum under 6C cow picks, go take a look..

It sure seems that NMG&F gives a lot of tags (landowner included) for a unit they actually put a sidenote in the proclamation stating - "Unit 6C has low elk numbers with scatter populations. Please contact the Department's NW Area Office before applying for these hunts". Is this not the case? I've been thinking about buying one of these tags since I can't draw an elk tag to save my life. Comments?

Unit 6C is pretty big, and the side note is a simple communication note letting the public know elk are scattered all over.I have hunted 6C three times and killed two elk. Its not my favorite unit but I have had some real good hunts there and continue to learn it , I will probly keep it as my 3rd choice unit but if I get lucky and do draw it again atleast I have some knowledge of the area. And it does have good numbers of elk....

That is one good lookin cow elk! glad to hear it came out of nm6c. I am a "long time listener first time caller" on MM. 6c is a very good unit if you know where to go. I have gone 2 for 2 there on bull hunts, and I hope to get a 3rd come october 14th!

Welcome Sweetbull. I too was a long time listener but beware , its addicting....Your right , 6C is very good , atleast its been good to me and our group eh...

Don Vathome,

Sorry to hear you didn't have much luck in 52. How much snow did you get?

Did you meet up with Trey and have that lasagna dinner in camp?

I'll be leaving Sunday for 52 and hope to find that lucky spot. We're supposed to meet up with Trey also.

Any suggestions on where not to go? This will be my first hunt there and so I'll be going on the advice of others.
