Pahvant going downhill

For all the hype about the Pahvant, there aren't very many "HUGE" bulls coming off. The biggest I've heard of so far is a 375". Not the hot spot anymore!!!

So because YOU havent HEARD of anything bigger than a LOWLY 375 PISSCUTTER, its no good anymore. OK then, they should just give me all the tags for next year, I will make sure they are used wisely and cull all the little 375" bulls.

I agree, everyone should start putting in for somewhere else, this unit isn't worth hunting anymore!!! there is just to many 350 bulls runing aroung ruining it for the 400 bulls. Put in somewhere else.

Yea and the same goes for the boulder now that the 420 bull has been killed I would look elsewhere. Those little dinky 370 type bulls are not big.
GIVE ME A BREAK...........................

>I can remember the day when
>a legitimate 375" bull WAS
>a monster. :)

Stil is ;-)

I would shoot the first 370 bull I seen.So yes I think a 370 bull is still huge.

They took two 420 class bulls off her last year one is the new state recored. It's going to be hard to top that, so I guess it's going down hill. Go figure.

EVERYBODY start putting in on the boulder its the only mountain housing 400 bulls.

You have got to be kidding....
I'll bet 90% of hunters would shot a 350-375 bull in a heart beat on Pahvant. Most 400 bulls end up under that when they are scored anyway.

Lets take a poll.

How big of a bull would you be happy with on one of the top units in Utah?

350 for me. If you find one bigger, good for you.

I was more than happy to kill my 360 5/8 bull on the Boulder unit last year. I would shoot one like him again in a heart beat.

I wish MM had real polls :(
For me, in the top 3 units--370, and I would hire an outfitter. The other good untis-340 DIY

What kills me is talking to those with tags who say they won't shoot anything under 390 or so. Everyone watches those certain videos thinking that every bull out there is 400+. All I know is that there are smaller bulls being killed on the Pahvant this year than there were last year by a long ways. All you city boys think that you can kill huge bulls anywhere, good luck! I agree with the 350 mark.

The Pahvant is still producing some amazing bulls, but I have been able to spend a considerable amount of time on that range this summer, and have only seen a couple bulls that will push the 400 inch mark. I'm not saying it's going down hill by any means, there's just not the bulls coming off there like there was last year. Time will tell!

The big bulls are still there, just how hard are these hunters willing to work for them. They are not huge because they are stupid and stand on the roads. There may not be as many as before but then you look at the number of bulls being taken year after year. I think the bigger bulls just go to where nobody will bother them and hang out. Sure, a few will be "lookin for love in all the wrong places" and meet a bullet but most of the big ol' boys are deep and dark...
The rut doesn't guarantee anything for sure.. Just gives the hunter some advantage that they normally wouldn't have...

WOW.. how everyone's standards have gone up... anything over 300" with a bow is awesome.... 350 bulls contrary to popular beleif are not behind every tree and 370 is a TOAD as for 400...well very few ever see a 400" bull much less get a oppertunity to take a shot... I will proudly display my little 310" 6x6 and smile BIG every time I think about the hunt...and prey for another tag someday....oh and yes it was in a "trophy" unit in Az

Right on atrain. I get stoked hunting spikes but hey maybe the day will come when I get to complain about not getting a 400 bull but I doubt it.

Atrain you hit that one square on the head! Why post such a thread about sub 375 bulls! There are lots of hunters proud of every size of bulls only to take a shot in the guts about lowly 375 bulls. Circumstances vary from hunter to hunter and season to season. Maybe one guy gets a 300 Pahvant bull and for his personal reasons is a damn good bull and is happy about it! I am beginning to hate score and do not believe half of them any way. Sounds like you also have a great bull!

I have a 325 bull on my wall from my 2001 Wasatch tag and not ashamed at all.

I know from experience that alot of people bump the score about 20-30". I think its from measuring the sixth point which is already accounted for on the main beam length.

AR,
Good point if you know how to get away from the road on any of the LE units you have a chance to find big bulls. I think the hunting society has got so focused on score that we are loosing our perspective on why we hunt. Lets all take a look at our reasons for being out in the mountains and appreciate what we have and yes there are some big bulls on the Pahvant as we both know.
God Bless,
L.T.

score means ????

LAST EDITED ON Sep-21-06 AT 10:58PM (MST)[p]And ktc has a good point too. So what with the score. Does the score make any bull less memorable than one with a higher score? Not in my book. I have three bulls hanging on my wall right now, ranging from 337 to 353 to 383, of course the biggest one being my daughters, but not one of these bulls is any less memorable than the other. The are all trophys in my book as they all meant something different to me and had different memories that came with each of them. One with a bow, one with family members, and then one with my daughter being the hunter, and they all are wonderful memories. I remember the first spike elk I shot with my bow as if it were yesterday. That was a trophy to me. Score is just a way to get a visual on the approximate size, and how it stacks up in the "books", but doesn't tell one thing about the experience or the memories. My wife who has become disabled in the last 3 years, wants to shoot a big bull in the worst way, and should be in the running for a permit next year. If we can get her a mature branch antlered bull, I will be estatic, as I know she will. And I'm sure that hunt will be every bit if not more memorable than any of the hunts I have been on.
I'm not saying a great scoring bull isn't cool, but you shouldn't measure your success by a number. We all get caught up in the number game here and there, but when it all comes down to the reason we hunt, it isn't because of 3 little numbers...

RE: score means ????

Antler,
I couldn't have said it better. All hunts are memorable to me whether you are successful or not. If the hunter says that their animal is a trophy, then it is, no matter how big it is. Good luck to you and your wife next year.

RE: score means ????

I agree. Numbers can drive a hunt straight to misery. Not sure I agree that the unit is going down hill completely.....414, 384, 381, 375, 340 are the ones I have heard about this year.

RE: score means ????

Rick,

Amen to your post. You worked long and damn hard for that 353 trophy. The thing that gets my goat is people just want to talk score, one up you, and don't take time to compliment what is good about a bull or listen to the story and circumstances. You can count me in helping your wife. The trophy in her case is wanting to get out in miserable circumstances. It is tough to focus on the great 375+ when taking your next step and keeping from being in pain and a trip to the ER is the next most important thing!

RE: score means ????

"have only seen a couple bulls that will push the 400 inch mark."

That quote is laughable. Only a couple 400 inch bulls on one unit. That is the problem with Utah management and Utah "Trophy" hunters. Only a couple 400 inch bulls. Our management practices has made the mentality of score a larger deal than the experience. While no one wants to see the raghorns as the harvest make-up, managing most units to produce "only a couple 400 inch bulls" is disallowing many to hunt and harvest those "lowly" 320-340 bulls.

How do you know when you arn't shooting enough bulls? When you are breaking your "records" every year or two. I had to shake my head when the Wildlife Board was told that Utah is number 1 in B&C bulls over the last 5 years. What they weren't told is Utah is also number 1 in length of wait.

I agree completely with antlerrick, ktc, and the others on the ramifications of score. My 352 5/8 bull is better than your 351 2/8 bull. What a joke. KTC- darn nice bull you shot. I imagine the hunt was as enjoyable as the kill.

RE: score means ????

Amen, Brothers!
ktc, once again that is a gorgeous bull.
If I'm ever lucky enough to draw any of the LE units, I'll be on cloud 9 just for the opportunity to go hunt mature bulls. I'd be ecstatic with any mature 6x6 over 330 :)

RE: score means ????

ramslam, You are right about the score making a hunt miserable. I have a friend who drew a LE bull elk last year, and took a great looking bull, scoring mid 370's. To this day he complains about shooting it and how he should have killed one that scored better. I always tried to tell him that his was a great bull, and not to dwell on the score, but he still is on the down kick. Now I just try to ignore him when he starts on the sympathy kick and change the subject..
It is funny to talk to some of the guys when they draw as they let the pressure of score really get to them.
I was in the same boat when I drew, but after the first few days of the hunt, and the enjoyable time I was having, I got so it didn't matter. I set myself a goal for a nice bull, and was able to make my dream come true.
ktc's bull is a dream come true, and with the pain I know he is going thru, made it that much more special.
Now, If I can just get a tag and go for that 401 4/8 bull!!! LOL
