Navaho elk hunt

just returned last nite from an elk hunt on the reservation in NM. My buddy paid $1000 for an archery elk tag in unit 5-A where we were told that the elk were underhunted and there was a 30 percent archery harvest. He paid a guide $400 (Tom Yazzi ) to point us in the right direction and semi-guide us. we met the guide and followed him to a campsite in the forest where he drew us a crude map on a piece of paper and then left saying he would return in a few day's to camp out with us for a while and help us get an elk, we never heard from him again, we were there 9 day's there were virtually NO elk in the area that we camped in. We drove about 20 miles each morning to other areas where we finally found some elk , my buddy passed on a spike and then a cow thinking that there were large bull's in the area and we had plenty of time to score. We finally hooked up with a local young man with fish and game who told us that we had better shoot the first legal animal that we found because bull's were few and far between, he hunted with us and my buddy called in a 6x6 for him and we quartered it out and packed it out, our new found friend had to leave for a youth hunt but sent his friend William to hunt with us and help us out, William hunted with us for 3 days and managed to put us into elk but my buddy couldn't get a clear shot so we came home empty handed but with great memorie's of 2 super young men who went out of their way to help a couple of abandoned hunter's. They invited us back next year for elk and deer if we can get drawn, thank's again to the Navaho nation resident's for their generosity (with the exception of Tom Yazzi)

Bill,
Sorry to hear that the hunt didn't turn out better for your friend. But now you have two young guys that were a help to you and moreso down the road, good luck with the other hunts you have coming up.

sounds to me like you ended up better off in the long run. Now you're setup for some DIY hunts with a cpl new friends.
Just don't invite a bunch of new guys along when you get the tag again and you should be fine.

Keep in touch with these young men and their familes. Invite them to your house or be their guests too.
Send them a nice thank you card, some gas money, some groceries and visit them up there anytime you can - look at some deer up there during the rut, etc.
Something like that, will go a long, long, long ways.
Tom Yazzie is a crook, probably from those crooks from - team yellowhorse.

What is the name of Tom's outfitting company? You can lodge a complaint with F&G. They keep complaints on file. He also needs to be a licensed outfitter to take any money from you and I believe he must have a contract with you. If not, well bad for him and his outfitting career.

WOW!! what makes you think yellow horse is a crook?

please provide some info! and your name

I am sure Yellow Horse would want to know his accusers.

I have hunted with yellowhorse and have had no complaints

infact the opposite... so why are they crooks?

have you hunted with them????

I know yellowhorse saw two bulls over 400 inches

killed last year.

what other Navajo guides killed ANY bulls over 400 last year?? thats right... NONE

Don't know anything about the guides you are talking about, but I can't help but comment on your last two statements:

"I know yellowhorse saw two bulls over 400 inches

killed last year.

what other Navajo guides killed ANY bulls over 400 last year?? thats right... NONE"

And that means what? Did he see them killed? or did he see them after they were killed? Did he shoot the two bulls himself? If so, then your last statement is true. If not, then you are wrong because I doubt any guide, any where, had killed two 400" bulls in one year!!!!

I've heard many of stories from locals in Sanders, Houck, Fort Courage about lot's of poaching done, and that's all I got to say about that.
That's wrong for the person to take the $400 and show them a bogus area and then not come back!

Just got off the phone with one of my cousins. He don't have the internent but would like to add that Team Yellowhorse was seen hunting at night with spotlights, they knew it was them because the guide forgot to take the "Team Yellowhorse" sign of his pickup.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-04-06 AT 01:13PM (MST)[p]If anyones seen spot lighting I would hope the F&G was called.

I doubt it was done why would a guide risk his license? the man is not an idiot.

"If not, then you are wrong because I doubt any guide, any where, had killed two 400" bulls in one year!!!!

you are correct. and I am wrong. I am sure no guide himself "killed" 2 - 400 bulls..

The way I look at it if a guide shows a client an animal he killed it. Even tho he didnt pull the trigger..

Just the way I think. nothing wrong with using a guide and not to take anything away from the hunter.

Last year Yellowhorse killed a 406 himself one of his clients killed a 402.

so he is successful and I am sure that breeds some contempt.

hey I am just stickin up for the guy because he is a good guy and dont think he is a crook or poacher by any stretch.

This thread didnt start by yellowhorse doing something wrong someone just lumped him in with another guy.

The name only came up as I've heard Tom Yazzie's name before and he was employed as one of their guides. I guess they got rid of him then? Geeze - there are so many yazzie's, begay's up there.
I've got a good friend in Sanders and get to hear all these stories and he's a Bible Baptist Christian man.

Half the people on the Rez have the name of Yazzi!!! Did you get an address or phone #? or check his I.D. Good Luck

I just talked to my friend Sam, in Sanders and I asked him if he heard of Tom Yazzie and he said he didn't know him.
I did ask him again about Yellowhorse and he talked to him earlier and he said he had a bunch of clients, which is good.
Anyways, anymore info on "Mr. Smith" aka. "Mr. Yazzie", I'll pass along on what I find out.
Just don't want other people get burned by people like this.

Navajo Nation Permitted Guides are required to have a contract with their clients, among other things like first aid card etc. I know an individual by the name you posted and would like the opportunity to talk with you a little by phone to obtain more info. My name is Rex P. Kontz and I am currently the President of the Navajo Guide's Association. This is a relative new group formed by a small number of Guides who are voluntarily associated. Our goals include efforts to raise the quality of the game, promote the sport of hunting, work cooperatively with the local F&W department and improve the quality of the guide services on the Navajo Nation. The Association is a fledging group and still developing.

It is unfortunate that your hunt did not go as well as you had anticipated. Although I do not have any official authority or responsibility for any other guide I do want to extend my apologies to you for your experience on the Navajo hunt. We do have a relatively new Guide in the Association by the name you indicated and I would like to verify any info you could provide. The individual we are associated with is active in fund raising, actively participates in meetings and Guide Association endeavors, so it doesn't sound like the same person. However members of our Association have collectively agreed to hold each other accountable to ethical practices.

I can be contacted at 928-729-2226 evenings after six PM. I sincerely hope that you will contact me. Thanks and good luck on all your future hunts.

Whoa, easy guy's I didn't mean to start a firestorm. I don't believe that Tom Yazzi (aka Tom Yellowhorse ) is associated with yellowhorse guide service, he live's in Sheep spring's and actually seemed like a great guy. We met in San Diego where he was visiting his daughter and we met his daughter who also seemed very nice. He hunt's with Darryl Begaye and they had some Arctic cat bigwig's out that first weekend and Tom said he would join us as soon as his client left probably wed, of course we never heard from him again . Regarding the two guy's that helped us out we are already in close contact, in case you may know them their name's are Donde Begaye and William (aka wild bill) thacker (sp) out of Navajo NM .Actually we don't look at the trip as a downer, we had a great time got up close and personal with a bunch of elk and made two outstanding friend's that will hopefully develop into a long term hunting relationship !

Rex, thank's for your interest, I'll pass your number on to my hunting buddy and he will contact you . I would rather you got all info from him then nothing will be 2nd hand info, Bill, P.S. I was very impressed with the Navajo people we got ice and fuel in Navajo and a lot of people asked us how we were doing and who was guiding us, when we told them we didn't have a guide they went out of their way to give us advice and even drew us map's of where they thought the elk were, one of those was Edison Sorral who was very helpful. thank's again to the Navajo nation for their generosity !!

>Hey shed, did you ever get
>that pm I sent you
>while ago?

Hey "AZtrophyhunter", Just checked my inbox, it stated that it was empty. Sorry never recieved a PM from you.

Don't you guys know where the name Begay comes from? Of course when the Govt came in back in the old days to take 'census' on reservations. They could not understand many of the last names so they would make it up, Begay comes from Biye meaning son of or related to.
So that is why there are so many Begays', they are all related to someone!
Yazzie is supposed to mean tree so not sure about that one.
about the only others I know are 'klizzie' which is goat or sheep and 'chan' (pronounced chont) kind of, meaning shxt.
I know some others but might offend some of you. ;o)

Regardless of the Yellowhorse guiding reputation or Tom Yazzie, I must say that there are other Navajo hunters (much like Dondi Begay and Will Thacker) who possess the courtesy and passion for hunting without a price or arrogance. In fact many Navajo hunters find joy in guiding visiting hunters. Although your experience with Mr. Yazzie was unfortunate, I am glad that you found satisfaction with Mr. Begay and Mr. Thacker. I myself had the pleasure of meeting these fine men. They not only possessed a pure fondness for hunting, but they also showed great respect for nature. For future hunters, I advise that they seek the guidance of Mr. Begay and Mr. Thacker.

Hey Guys. My dad and I have hunted with Team Yellowhorse back in 05,he put me on a nice Bull Elk 6x6. I was also there when his client killed a 402 bull elk 2 days before my hunt. I saw the elk in the back of the clients truck later that afternoon. I have never heard anything bad about them guys. They are by the book and follow all laws. I have been Elk and Deer hunting for a number of years and have killed some big mule deer and this was the largest bull elk I have shot. I am looking forward to hunting with them again and also referring friends to them. They know what they are doing and are very good business man and hunters.
Happy Hunting
