I was lucky enough to draw a nonres combination tag, I was not lucky when the rancher changed his mind about permission! I would appreciate any info about a good area for a good bull. I am in shape , but no horses and will probably be hunting alone. any help would be great!!

I got back a week or so ago from Southwest Montana, got into a few but not like we did last year. We saw some good bulls in there last year.

We hunted out of Wisdom in the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness. There's a lot of area, but some pressure as well.

Let me know if you need more details.

I have been hunting mostly colorado and some new mexico..
How bad is the pressure in montana? I have learned that some places in colorado you can't get a camping spot much less get some really good hunting.

After the first week of Rifle season the crowds thin out quite a bit. The later in the season seems to push the elk into more excessible spots. (same as most places) I moved to MT 5 years ago and have been amazed at the amount of pressure there is. Best bet is hunt mid week, after the first week and cover ground away from roads. Where were you planning on hunting before getting shut down?

The big hole (around wisdom) seems to get a lot of pressure but then again there are supposed to be a ton of elk there.

Pick a good chunk of National Forest off a map....and go HUNT it. There are places better than others here, but all of it can be good. There are big bulls in every mountain range, but there are Very few taken each year....compared to the number of hunters.

I've hunted all over the state, I hunt hard, usually hiking 3-10 miles from the roads on a daily basis, maybe 10-20 days a season, and I've yet to kill a big bull. I've blown a few chances with bow, but haven't even had a good opp. with rifle. Its not easy, takes some luck and some work.

Good Luck

email me if you want a more specific bit of info...but like I said, I am no big bull master...nowadays, I'm just looking for an ELK!

When I lived in Montana my best hunting success happened late in the season hunting borders of elk "safe havens". After a heavy snow (or very cold snap) the elk seem to stray from their "haven".

Unfortunately for the out of state hunters, this method requires knowing which land owners do not allow hunting.
