i was just wondering how the early elk hunts went this year, i know 4 people that had tags besides myself...2 archery and to rifle in 3c and they were 0 for 4 just wondering if the rest of the state had it hard.....cbryant

I killed a tiny little weener archery bull so did a buddy. My grandfather and uncle killed 2 little weener rifle bulls and I helped 2 guys kill 2 more little teeensy weensy rifle bulls. Everyone is right, Arizona sucks, the drought made all the big bulls into raghorns, the raghorns into spikes and the spikes into cows. I am starting to put in for New mexico and Utah from here on out. Utards here I come in about 20 years or so!!!

Unit 8 archery had a ton of pressure in some of the areas we hunted and most were cow elk hunters that we talked to.I hope it goes back to less cow tags during the archery bull hunts for those who draw in the future.bullwidgeon I hope to hunt Utah also but very tough draw odds I was hoping I could get a tag in about 30 years or so.

I drove down from Oregon (GO DUCKS) to help a buddy In Unit 5. Bulls were everywhere, tough calling, but a lot of fun and he had plenty of opportunities at 300" bulls, the biggest bull I saw in 6 days was a 340 bull.
Its funny to listen to all the AZ boyz bitchin about the growth of the Horns in AZ this year. I was born and raised in Phoenix but since college have lived in Oregon so i know first hand about small bulls and tough hunting, AZ at its worst is a great archery hunt..........

LAST EDITED ON Oct-13-06 AT 11:43PM (MST)[p]It's been a tougher year in Arizona, but still ok. Our group went 2/2, the second bull took 13 days to fill. 2005 will be a tough year to beat for antler growth. As Ryan Hatch stated, "05' may be the best antler growth year any of us will see in our life time." Just hunt hard and hope for the best for the future. This may not of been a year we all dream about, but big bulls will always walk Arizona. Good Luck!

Of the 2 people that I know that had early tags, they went 2 for 2. One was a archery spike bull and the other was a friends wife that took a 340 early rifle bull. It was broke up and still scored well. If it didn't have the broken points it could have scored 360 pretty easy.

Went 7 for 7 on bulls this yr. ranging from 335 to 390 in AZ. great time, 5 were 1st time archery hunters, including a 75 yr. old man who got it done on a great bull. Lets just hope for a wet winter this yr....

My hunt is yet to come, but I know of a couple others. My dad got a nice 6 point in 6A north. My buddy's camp went 3 for 3 with a nice bull in 5B south. my brother in laws camp went 4 for 8 with a real nice 360 class bull in 5A. from what i heard success rates in those areas were pretty good for the ones who got out and did some walking.

A few of the tiny bulls we knocked over...
