We've got a Muzzy hunt next weekend. I'm just curious to see how folks did this weekend. Jim

Jim I have a friend up in Santa Fe that two guys in his group killed nice bulls on the second bow hunt. They said it was pretty muddy back a couple weeks ago , but the hunt was tough ..17 is just awesome, but I'm thinking the rut is pretty much finished up with most of the cows being bred. Its supposed to rain over in that country tonight so as long as it stays cool the bulls may stay up longer in the am trying to replenish what they lost during the rutt...WaterCanyon country , but you already knew that eh...Vini is over in 16 right now and I'm wondering how he and his brother did over the weekend...

Thanks NMHUNTNUTT1. Its sucha big unit, lots of country and as you know, they can be in the cholla or at the top. Jim

Jim,

I think your hunter called me the other night. The guy from West Virginia? I spok with him for a good half hour and told him all about the areas we hunted during the archery hunt. Let me know if he needs any more info.

We had a great hunt!!! We didn't kill anything, but saw some true monsters and chased elk every day. It was a difficult hunt, and we worked hard. There was water every where! Every tank, creek, and drainage was holding water. This caused the elk to spread out over the entire range. Sitting water would have been a waste of time. For the most part the elk would bed in the higher ridges and move down to the lower country at night to feed and rut. As soon as it began to get light the elk would move back into the higher country to bed. If you got behind the elk when they were moving that was pretty much it. The key was to figure out where they were moving to and from and cut them off. They would bugle back to cow calls, but then move in the other direction. I personally used calls very little, and usually only to locate bulls.
