Man, am I glad I don't take my own advice. I was feeling my age last month and decided to slow down and stop hunting alone . I asked for advice from MM member's for an easier place to hunt in Wyo and I recieved terrific responses with some even providing details of where to go.After thinking it over I decided to wait until next year (or the year after ) to slow down and I went back to where I had bowhunted in Wyo last month to hunt with my rifle. I decided that if I wasn't going to stop hunting alone I would at least try to hunt slower and not alway's have to see what's over the next mountain. So I went in about 1/2 mile to a spot that seemed perfect , I could see across a meadow for about 150 yds to my left and could also see into a canyon with a creek running thru it for about 150 yds to my right. I promised myself that I would stay there from daylite until at least 2 hours to give the elk a chance to move into my area, I wasn't there 20 min when a nice 4x4 muley about 25 or 26 in came right up to me and would have ran into me if I didn't move, when he saw me he got into his turbo pogo mode and bounced away, I thought this is the perfect spot ! After 2 hrs that seemed like a life time I hadn't seen anything else so I decided to use plan B and move to the left into the canyon but when I sneaked around some pines I saw another hunter about 100 yds from me and directly in the path I was headed (what a surprise )so I quickly crossed the meadow to get to cover and sat for another 30 minutes, still no action but I did hear 2 shots within 1/4 mile of me so I knew elk where in the area. I decided on plan C which is what I normally do, very slowly I moved up the hillside taking about 3 steps and then glassing for a few moment's. I had only gone about 40 yds into the aspens when I noticed movement to my left heading towards me from left to right, it was a bull moving quickly downhill but he didn't know I was there. I could have taken a good shot at about 70 yds but I decided to try and stop him first just to be sure so I hit my Hoochie momma call once and he put on the brakes and stopped behind a cluster of aspens about 40 yds away, I had a clear shot of his vitals and took it !! He dropped in his track's but then tried to get up I had chambered another round but didn't want to put another .338 into him unless it was nessesary, it wasn't , he never got up. After thanking GOD and everybody else I could think of I started to quarter him and shouldered the front quarter and headed back about 1 mile uphill to my truck. about halk way back I started thinking maybe I should have taken my advice and found an easier hunt . I went back for the second trip and brought out the hind quarter /backstraps and neck roast, by the time I got back to my truck I was comepletly exhausted and decided to go back the next day for the remaining 2 quarters, Just then a couple of good sameritans on 4 wheelers came along and asked if they could help so they rode me back to the area and brought out the rest of my elk. GOD Bless'em so I have a 4x5 in the freezer and still have a Colorado elk hunt in Nov, Fella's, it doesn't get any better then this !! Bill

Bill,
Congrats to you on another hunt and I know you won't be home too long before heading out again to CO.
Maybe I will see you during the 4th season.

I KNOW I'M NOT AS SPRY AS I ONCE WAS.(I'M 34 YEARS OLD). I KNOW THAT MIGHT SOUND WEIRD, BUT I CAN TELL A DIFFERENCE FROM WHEN I WAS 20 YEARS OLD. CONGRATS ON THE BULL. I HOPE YOU DO WELL IN COLORADO. LOVE TO SEE SOME PICS FROM BOTH IF YOU CAN.

thanks for postin that I'm 50, and had been feeling the same way I have a late elk hunt in E-Oregon ...thanks Manny...

Congrats on the bull. Let's see some pics. I know how you feel about the age thing. I am just about to turn 40 and have been feeling it the last couple months. I can't do some of the things that I used to do. Guess I just got to work harder. Good job on the bull again.

Got my photos back today and if I can get my grandson to post them for me I will. To you fellas that are 50 or 34 you ain't seen nuthin yet,I thought I was invincible (and had 3 broken noses to prove it ) until I was 60ish and then I began to get in touch with my own mortality. What a wake-up call ! even though you feel great inside you start to notice little things that effect your everyday life, harder to keep up with the younger guys and running out of breath or stamina long before you used to.I used to be the guy that most people couldn't keep up with and suddenly I'm the one who can't keep up, it takes a lot of mental adjustment but in the long run if you are honest with yourself it's o.k. All in all it's still a great life and instead of leading the pack I'm trying to pass on whatever knowledge and experience I have to the next generation of hunters !, Bill

Well said Bill, I know exactly how you feel and try to do the same too.
The last time I saw you in Mackay you were lean and mean, but the older we get the tougher it gets.
That's why we don't stay at home still trying to climb the hills and walk as far as we can at something we all love to do and that is HUNT.
