Hello,
I'm going on my first deer hunt on Oct 28th. Me and my dad are going the be hunting starting Oct 28th. I see on the Elk posts that you guys know alot about unit 16. Can anyone give us some tips on the area?

Thanks, Amie

Amie,
My boss is in unit 16B on an elk hunt as I write this. As soon as he gets back I will see what he saw afar as deer go. I will be in unit 16A starting sat helping a friend with his elk hunt. Will give you an update when I get back.

Amie,
I was up in 16A a couple of weeks ago and saw a few HUGE mule deer. Go south out of Reserve into the Sixshooter area. Thats where we were. There was several nice bucks running together. They were all bached up then and in velvet. I am sure they are hard horned now and possibly by themselves. If you are looking into the southern part of 16, check out around the "Cooney" off of the Wall Lake Road leaving out of the Mimbres Valley. Heard of some nice ones seen in there in early Sept.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, weapon in one hand, calls in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

Just got back from 16A around the snow lake area and saw some nice deer in the collins park area. We even saw 6 of those wolves that are endangered. we tried to get closer for some pictures, but they went into the trees. saw a nice bull on the 16E side also.
Not very many deer seen in the big burn area before snow lake and lot's of the roads are closed around there, due to weather damage, as they say.
We were way back in there and we turn a corner and there was a state trooper patrolling! we were stopped and given a verbal warning for seat belts. couldn't believe it.

We were in 16A last week and only saw one mule deer doe...and not too many elk either. Very, very wet, lots of water and food for the animals. They should winter great and the does and cows should be extremely healthy for a fantastic fawn/calf crop in the spring.
