No trophys but we did it again. 8 hunters filled 10 tags including both either sex tags getting filled with bulls. My son took a 6 point, nothing great but a good one for the area.

I know there will be doubters but they were all taken on opening day, before 2:30 PM and on public land. One of the hunters (15 years old) had 2 cow tags and one had an either sex and a cow. I know my dad, me, my son and at least 3 of my partners each saw over 100 head. There was one herd of over 80 elk and 2 other herds with over 40 in them that got chased across the side of the canyon we hunt. The big herd had over 20 bulls in it. Ran into 2 other hunters that had seen 6 or more bulls but had yet to fill their cow tags. Awesome.

I have pictures of his bull and 40 quarter bags filling up our camp. I think there are some good pictures of us packing the elk out on horses too. Just need my son to show me how to transfer the pics to my computer and then I'll post.

LOVE TO SEE THE PICS!!!! I'M GLAD YOUR SON WAS SUCCESFUL, AND EVERYONE ELSE!

Congratulations!

How did one hunter have 2 cow tags and how did another have an either sex and a cow tag? I'm assuming you were in Colorado and isn't the first season either sex only?

Califelkslayer, I don't doubt you guys did that good, especially if you were hunting in the same area you have in previous years. I'd be more surprised if you didn't fill them all. Congratulations.

Dutch, there are either sex and cow only tags for the first season.

Hunted Units 3, 4, 441 ect. There are either sex tags and cow tags. If the cow tags don't go in the draw, you can apply for another (second) tag in August. The either sex tags take at least one point so those of us that have 10+ points haven't got a bull tag or ES tag since 01 as a second choice.

Bugling like crazy. Heard at least 4 bulls bugling on the ride in. Heard bulls bugling all day on the opener even with all of the shooting. I heard a bull bugle on Sun night while I was taking a leak out our tent.

My son and I screwed up numerous opportunities on bulls the first 4 hours of the season. One error after another. Moved from the spot we sat the first hour to the spot I couldn't find in the dark. Got 100 yards, approximately 60 head ran within 40 yards of where we had sat for an hour. We could see them fine but moving fast through the aspens, not good enough for him to shoot.

Twice we got up to go help my dad quarter his cow and one time a bull made us as we stood up. A second time, we were leaving and were whispering and he saw a good bull on the ridgetop, 60 yards away. He may have got a quick shot but I was in his way. We laughed about both mistakes at the time but I was getting worried. Finally, I sat him about 200 yards away from where I was quartering my dad's cow and he had a herd of approximately 60 elk almost run him over. He almost shot a 5 point until he saw the 6 point. Took him with one shot through the front of the shoulder/base of the neck with a .280 with 160 gr. Nosler Partitions.

I shot a calf as I was quartering his bull.
